What happens to Estrogen if fibroids are gone?

I am not sure this is the correct place to ask this question but...My docotr has said my uterus is a 20 week size. She only did a physical exam as I have many past ultrasounds showing fibroids. She is pushing for a hysterectomy. I asked for hormone tests and was told they are not helpful at all and a waste of money. Then told that fibroids are estrogen fueled. Ok. Maybe. But without testing one's hormone levels how can they be positive. And if that is the case and they take the uterus and fibroids where does all the excess estrogen go now? Breasts? Does it now pose a cancer threat? I realize it ALWAYS can pose a cancer threat but am so confused at the lack of concern. I am going for a second opinion but from what I hear, the doctors in my area are all about surgery and meds. I prefer to find a root cause and treat that first. I guess my question is, has anyone had an answer about excess estrogen after fibroids are removed? I am disappointed in the doctors that are annoyed that their patients do research and question how they come to their conclusions. Oh, and I have read recently that fibroids may be due to genetics which makes sense since my mom, her twin sister and both grandmothers had them. Thanks for any information you are able to provide.

Re: What happens to Estrogen if fibroids are gone?

Having fibroids removed doesn't change your estrogen levels. Whatever your blood level is, it's the same blood going to all your tissues. But there are other approaches to fibroids, such as UAE, which is non-surgical. You might be interested in consulting an interventional radiologist who does the procedure. Also myomectomy, surgery to remove fibroids but preserve the uterus, is an option for some. Hysterectomy is not the only answer and you are wise to seek another opinion--or more.

What happens to Estrogen if fibroids are gone?

Fibroids are estrogen driven however fibroids also produce their own enzyme called Aromatase. This is produced in abundance by fibroids and it recycles through the body to fuel the fibroids. It's affects are similar to estrogen but is not estrogen. Some doctors attempt to counter excess estrogen with progesterone however fibroids will often grow because the excess Aromatase is not being addressed. One well known Aromatase inhibitor is DIM however fibroids will resume their troublemaking behavior once it is stopped. I had multiple symptoms of excess estrogen however after I was embolized (UAE) I noticed many of these symptoms disappeared. One example is my hair was extremely frizzy and kinky. After I was embolized and the fibroid was dead my hair returned to soft and silky. I had a couple major sweat a thons after the procedure and think my body began to eliminate that junk. I felt so much better afterwards. Five years later my fibroid has shrunk 90% and I feel pretty darn good. My fibroid was my problem and I treated the problem. Once the problem was resolved my body worked to rid itself of the debris and excess hormones. My fibroid was big and located in the muscle. It shrank over about a year and a half. I highly recommend this as a first step vs. jumping into major surgery. It's a very personal decision but I have no regrets.

What happens to Estrogen if fibroids are gone?

Oh--I think genetics do play a factor in the propensity to develop fibroids but BPA exposure is a very significant factor too. It is abundant in everyday products and is a known endocrine disrupters. I had no idea I was consuming and using products that made my fibroids grow. I am very careful now to use clean products and makeup and to stear clear of plastics. This is so hard to do since our foods are wrapped and stored in plastic wrap. Plastic is everywhere! I use stainless and glass and refuse to use plastic Starbuck cups. I put icy drinks in the hot drink cups but there's the top and the straw. Plastic and plastic. Mummies had fibroids but were they as huge as they get now? Read about endocrine disrupters. A major result is fibroid tumors.
