Do you know of any older women having a hysterectomy?
My mother is 84 years old and has a prolapsed rectum and uterus. She has tried the pessary but this has it's own problems.
Do you of any women in this age category having a successful Hysterectomy?

I am sorry that your mother is in this situation! Off hand, I can't think of anyone currently on the site who has had a hysterectomy in her 80's, but I am thinking there has been at least the mention of women having a successful one in her 80's.
What type of a doctor is your mother seeing? Have you talked to a urogynecologist? Possibly a more specialized doctor, or one who deals primarily with elderly patients, might have some other options to consider or could share the pros and cons of surgery for your mother.
I wish you both the best! I am sorry I don't have any concrete information to share!

Re: Do you know of any older women having a hysterectomy?
I know of a lady at church who had a hysterectomy at 79 or 80. I talked with her a few weeks ago and she said that it went well. She did not say anything of having problems, but then she is a person who doesn't seem to complain any.

PBlonde -
My mother was 87 had a hysterectomy for endometrial cancer and a bowel resection for colon cancer (unrelated to one another) at the same time.
She came through everything fine. I will say she is one tough lady. She helped me a lot when I was feeling blue during my recovery.
for you and your mom.

Re: Do you know of any older women having a hysterectomy?
Thank you for sharing with me girls. Right now my mom is scared and wants to not do anything. I don't think she will be able to go on like this though. I am trying to encourage her with anything positive I hear.
She has been seeing a gynecologist. She put a pessary in and when it had to be removed it was quite painful. The gynecologist also told her they could do the hysterectomy by giving her an epidural and not put her under anesthetic.
I mentioned this to my own GP and he told me that when the prolapse is that low it is like delivering a baby. The surgery is done through the vagina. Only thing is my mom rectum is falling too. Sigh..........
I can't make her do anything but just try to give her the facts. I hope things will be okay for her. She may even choose to put a pessary back in. I am the one that goes in with her. sigh.......not fun.
Thanks again girls!

I can totally related when my mom was about 83 or 84 she started having bad bleeding. She had never been to a gyn in her life. She was raised on a farm and had been a midwife when she was younger. SHe grew up before all the Dr.s and gyns.
My sister got her to a gyn and when they tried to do a biopsy they couldn't. Gyn wanted to do send her to the dr. and do the surgery right then but she would have none of it.
I guess in some weird way we got lucky because when she was 87 she went anemic and collapsed we thought it was blood loss from what we knew had to be uterine cancer but it ended up being blood loss from the colon cancer. So she did go with both surgeries at that time. I don't know if we would have ever gotten her in for a colonoscopy!

Re: Do you know of any older women having a hysterectomy?
My 80 year old mother had davinci hyst and repair last year for endometrial cancer and the repair while they were in there. She had zero pain, no anesthesia problems, and went home alone. She was in good health otherwise. I think the davinci surgery was easy for her. Hope this helps.
