Surgery for adhesions anyone?
My uterus was removed 15 years ago. I took premerin last January for about 6 months, but couldn't overcome the psychological fear of hormones so I stopped taking it and tried to deal with the hot flashes. I took black cohosh for 1 week and the flashes stopped. Three months later I was having pains (like I had a urinary tract infection). Saught med. attention, tested and found no bacteria, but was treated with Flagyl just in case. A week later the pain was growing more intense. MRI/MRA study revealed adhesions in lower abdominal cavity attached to my bladder and my left ovary attached to the posterior of my bladder. At this point I'm trying to picture this. My gynocologist said I would have to have surgery to remove the adhesions. For good reasons I'm putting the surgery off until mid May.
One month later I started having horrible stomach cramps after eating. Then heartburn that kept me up all night. The pains would intensify when my bowels moved. I'm taking metamucil for my bowel troubles, which relieves much of the pain, but my stomach is soooooo distended. Lord, I'm beginning to resemble a pregnant woman. I used to have a nice figure, but now I'm wearing big shirts because I'm embarrassed and feel disfiguered .My doctor's can't or don't want to answer the burning question of what's going on inside me.
My stools at times are spiral-shaped other times disk-shaped, a floating continuous chain of wierd shapes that stick together and hang [there]. It sounds so gross, but what's even more gross is today I saw some blood when I wiped myself. I couldn't tell whether it was on the stool or not so I dawned some rubber gloves and gagged and picked and pulled as I looked for blood in my stool. I didn't see any, but does that mean that everything is okay?
Has anyone had a similar experience who's also had the adhesion surgery? What was the outcome? Found any good resources of info? As the month of May draws closer, my curiousity increases. Please share your experiences with me as I prepare for this surgery.

Surgery for adhesions anyone?
(((purified))) I haven't had surgery for adhesions specifically, though I did have some adhesions taken down during colon surgery a year after my hyst.
I wonder, have you seen any other DRs besides your GYN recently? Have you had a colonoscopy? Consulted a gastroenterologist? I'm wondering if perhaps that could give you some information that might help you avoid potentially having the wrong surgery.

-Linda

Surgery for adhesions anyone?
I just wanted to send some s your way. I am in the process of seeing a gastro and my gyn due to GI/bowel issues and endo. I have endo on my bowel walls and my IBS has been crankier lately, along with some right sided pain. So I feel your pain, literally!
My gyn sent me to a gastro where I had a CT scan and colonoscopy. Thankfully at this time, the inside of my colon looks fine. However, I have endo on my bowel walls (that was discovered before my hyst over 5 yrs ago) and the CT is showing a pelvic mass on the right--maybe a chocolate cyst, I don't know, I have follow up testing Monday.
I also suggest you see a gastro. And I am not sure what type of dr you will be seeing for your adhesion surgery, but I have been told that a gyn/onc often as additional training that can be beneficial in removing adhesions. Will a surgeon who is experienced with working with the bowel be assisting with your surgery?
And are you seeing a dr who specializes in endo? Is there one anywhere near your area? How about a reproductinve endocrinologist? They often have additional knowlege about endo.
We do have information about adhesions and endo in our resource database, just click on the Resource tab to the left of your screen.
I wish you the best for your health and hope you can find a team to assist you with all your health needs. in there and do keep us posted!

I'm not sure if I am to send seperate replies or all in one.
Thnx for your replies. My emotions are all over the place right now, so your feedback really helps me.
Weiser, are you having ? I've given up holding it in, it just irritates what's inside. I am definitely seeking a gastro this week and looking into and endocrinologist.
I was told that I would have to find a surgeon and that my Gyn would assist with the operation. I'm currently seeing an oncologist surgeon (no gyn background), because he's the only surgeon I could find that will accept my insurance . He happens to work in a women's wellness group practice. Do you think the two will suffice? or maybe have the gastro assist also. Don't need overkill, but want to have as much knowledge and experience as possible.
Is the colonoscopy necessary? Will a laproscopy do the same thing? My surgeon says we'll schedule the lap. just prior to surgery.
For now I feel . Much Thanks for your support.

Surgery for adhesions anyone?
Yes on the --my gastro started me on Nexium for it and I think it may be helping some, but not completely. I have not been on it long so I will see how it is when I see her the end of the month.
You should like you are getting a pretty good team together. Just make sure they all know everything, so the co-ordination goes well. Have all records from all drs sent to all the other drs, so everyone knows everything!
And a colonoscopy looks inside the colon, something a lap can not do. I really would suggest both, as you are having endo and bowel issues. More than likely, as soon as you see a gastro, you will be scheduled for a colonoscopy.
Having a lap before surgery will be very benefitial, as then the surgeons will know exactly what they will be needing to do for your surgery, and which drs will be needed to assist.
I wish you the best! Asking questions and researching are the right things to do!

Surgery for adhesions anyone?
Hello Friends,
I'm calling an endocrinologist tomorrow. I believe she does GI also. Are there any questions that you had that I should consider asking? I don't know where to begin.
Weiser, is the Nexium for gas? or to soften the stool? I know what you mean about not being sure whether its helping or not. For some reason I had a gas attack today, it ranked up there with bowel movement.
I'll do my best to keep all docs informed. This has to be the busiest of busy spells for me, my plate is very full and on top of it I'm having to advocate to receive optimal healthcare.
This website is alllllll that and then some Much Love to All members.

The Nexium is to hopefully help with the bloating. She has me on Fibrocon for a "softener"--don't think that is working well either! But, due to other health issues, my diet is all out of whack right now, and when you have IBS, that is a ! My GP had me on a prescription IBS med that never worked so we will see what the gastro tries.
I hope you are able to find some relief soon!
