Abdominal or Vaginal? Vaginal Shortening?

I have been diagnosed with cervical cancer. The specialist said it "looks like StageI". Shouldn't there be some tests involved to see what stage or if I have it anywhere else? My biggest concern is I don't want to be cut from my bellybutton to my toes but that is the option I have been given so far. I go for a 2nd opinion tomorrow and I want to know why 10 years ago my mother had the same thing and she had a vaginal hysterectomy but I don't have that option. And what is the deal with vaginal shortening? How often does it really cause a problem? I'm freaking out a little bit I guess. I mean, I just turned 33 and only started REALLY enjoying sex over the last few years. Finally got to the point where I feel empowered by my libido. I don't care so much about not being able to have kids but don't take away the sex life too! Can anyone give me some kind of advice so I can actually sleep tonight?

Abdominal or Vaginal? Vaginal Shortening?

I am so sorry you have been diagnosed with cervical cancer. My mom had it 22 years ago. She had a radical hysterectomy (abdominal-took uterus, cervix, ovaries, tubes and lymph nodes) and was just fine.

A 2nd opinion is always a good idea! As far as having an option as to which kind of surgery you have is determined by a number of things. For example, some doctors aren't really trained in all of different types and the type of problems you are having or any repair work can detemine what type you will have. I know whoever the doctor is who does your surgery will do the right thing for you and you will be fine.

I had a TVH and I haven't noticed any difference in the length of my vagina and better yet, my DH hasn't noticed any difference. Sometimes it can be shortened...again based on circumstances. The vagina is a very strong muscle that will stretch as needed. Fortunately, there has been no change in our lovelife. In fact, it is better and the big 'O' is more intense.

I wish you the very best of luck in your journey. Please keep us posted on how things are going!

Deb

Good luck with your 2nd opinion tomorrow! I hope you find more answers!

What I read.....

There is an article in pelvicfloor.com - very graphic - that states when there is cancer involved they like to do abdominal surgery to make sure they get it all and don't spread it.
I don't know about the sex part, I haven't been cleared for it yet - but I am sure hoping that it will be as good as before!!
