Hysterectomy scheduled 2/3

Hi there. I was supposed to have my hysterectomy on Jan 13 but it had to be rescheduled due to the current situation. So now I am scheduled for outpatient instead overnight stay. But we will stay overnight in a hotel since are going 2 hours away for the surgery. I am starting to get a little nervous. I have had surgery before but this is one will be life changing for me. Its like taking a different direction you know? But I have to do it for my health. I have endo and also get migraines during my cycle that debilitating at times. I want to be human again. I am ready for that. But I am still scared for what it will be like afterwards. I haven't had a major surgery like this in 10 years.

Re: Hysterectomy scheduled 2/3

Hello!! I just wanted to say hi and let you know that I am in the same boat. I was supposed to have my total hysterectomy (with BSO) this past summer, but I was too afraid because of covid and what not. Mine is now scheduled for February 8th and I am so very nervous as well - mostly too, because this is so life changing.

9 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy with reconstruction. I made that decision so easily, and thought I could make this decision so easily as well, but this hysterectomy surgery is a hard one for me to accept. I know I have to do it for my health, but girl it's hard! I'm so scared of the aftermath.

I will be thinking of you! We can do this! We are strong and have been through so much already.

Re: Hysterectomy scheduled 2/3

I am scheduled for mine on 2/2 and so, so nervous! I had myomectomy surgery in 2011 and it was an emergency so all my memories are so traumatic.

I, too, was meant to have surgery earlier - in July - but canceled because it was all so overwhelming with Covid and having to be alone at the hospital. I thought, surely, things would be better by now! But, now numbers are even worse in my state than before and I still can't bring my husband with me. My fibroids have gotten much larger, though, and my doctor does not want me to wait any longer.

Re: Hysterectomy scheduled 2/3

Hello!

I've been there! It is scary and painful but you will get through the surgery part just fine. That was a breeze compared to menopause. After surgery your mouth will be so dry from being intubated and you may get sores in your mouth. I had awful ones for about a week after and couldn't eat. Sepacol lozenges helped immensely if that happens to you. I underestimated what a total hysterectomy would do to my life after. I had mine almost a year ago literally 10 days before the shutdown and I am still a mess. Not trying to be a downer but if I could go back and keep it all I would. But I was told by my doctor that I had to have it all out due to borderline tumors on my ovaries. It was to unpredictable to keep anything. They even took my cervix. I am dealing with so many menopause symptoms and depression and UTI's now. I'd say if you are having your ovaries removed to start hormones right away so it can help with the symptoms and hopefully prevent all the problems I have. I have a blood clotting gene so I was advised by my hematologist to not do hormone replacement therapy. But now I am such a mess that I need something. So thinking of doing the patch.

I hope you have a speedy recovery! Good luck!

Re: Hysterectomy scheduled 2/3

Hi April!

Thank you for being so honest. I think it's important to know everything going into it. I'm very concerned about my body being thrown into menopause. Unfortunately, I can't go on hormone replacement therapy either because I had estrogen positive breast cancer and I have the BRCA2 gene.

I decided to go back and see my therapist. I had a therapist and was on Prozac after my first child was born because I had horrible postpartum anxiety. The Prozac helped immensely and my doctor actually told me that they sometimes use anti-depressants for menopausal symptoms.

I hope you find relief for your symptoms. Thank you for your insight, it's very very helpful for me!

Re: Hysterectomy scheduled 2/3

I am sorry that you had breast cancer! I can't even imagine! I actually met with a women's specialist yesterday to talk about hormone therapy and if there's anything I can take. Unfortunately, they all have risks for clots so I have to roll the dice if I take hormones. Such hard decisions we have to make. I am currently using a vaginal suppository called Intrarosa 6.5mg. You do it at night and it has helped me a lot. It isn't estrogen more of a steroid I think. The doctor said cancer survivors use it to help with their symptoms. Maybe ask your doctor if that is an option for you.
