23 hour stay?
Kinda of off subject but all the same....I was told at my pre-op that I will be having a 23 hour stay! They are categorizing it as same-day surgery. Am i not hearing right? i thought i'd be in hospital for at least 2 days/nights? I'm having a SAH. If I'm admitted at 8am then they would have to discharge me by 7am the next day! It seems unbelievable to me. has anyone had the same situation? Not that I wouldn't love to go home but i'm concerned about any problems that may arise. i don't have a SO. My sis will be there during my surgery and then in the morning. Just curious what someone else may have been told and what actually ocurred?

Re: just returned from pre-op appt & upset by hospital policies!
summerof75, I thought only laprascopic surgery patients went home after one evening. I have read that abdominal surgery patients typically stay 2-4 nights. I know that I am scheduled to stay two nights for my SAH.

Re: just returned from pre-op appt & upset by hospital policies!
summerof75,
I had a DVH and was released the next day but was not classified as same day surgery. I would ask when you are admitted because I know that other patients who had SAH or TAH were staying for a couple of days. I don't imagine that they will release you at 7 am in any case. I would be absolutely amazed if the doctor showed up early enough to discharge you by that time. The nurses are probably doing shift change and getting ready for breakfast. But like I said, ask them when you get there. They should be able to tell you what the plan is. It is possible that the pre-op people got it mixed up. Sending you lots of hugs and best wishes for an easy surgery and quick recovery,.

Re: 23 hour stay?
I had a vaginal hysterectomy, and I freaked out when I was told it would be just a 23-hour stay. I was assured that if I wasn't doing well, I would be able to stay longer.
The 23-hour guideline has to do with insurance coding. If you stay for less than 24 hours, it is considered extended observation rather than actually being admitted to the hospital.
My surgery was at 7:30 am, and I got to my room around 11 or 11:30. That was when the 23-hour clock was started. Although my initial recovery was slow, once I started feeling better, I felt better quickly. I was actually ready to go home by 9:30 the following morning.
If you have any concerns about your readiness to go home, share them with the doctor and nurses.

Re: 23 hour stay?
Thanks so much for your responses! Zenyatta5 you are riht I will just ask the nurse when I am in Pre-Op. Fritzi64 you're correct aswell they probably start the clock when I get to my room. The nurse at my pre-op appt. knew I was having an abdominal surgery but she repeated to me I was a "Same-Day Surgery". I was shocked when i called the hospital to get my arrival time and I was connected to the same-day surgery unit. I have what i thought to be very good insurance. Maybe it starts out as Same-day and then converts to longer-term? I was in the hospital 5 days when I had my daughter by c-section so I know how "crazy" one can get being there so long but at least I got to go home with a baby. I keep wanting to cancel the surgery due to my fears of the outcome. I have felt a little better listening to everyone's stories and encouragement. I hope after Monday(DEC 28) I will be writing to you about how much better i feel. Thanks for being there!

Re: 23 hour stay?
Don't be concerned about being sent through "Same Day Surgery Unit"...I was too, even though they planned all along for me to stay 3-5 days...at my hospital, all pre-planned surgeries go through the Same Day unit, although there are different waiting areas for the folks accompanying patients who are truly only having same-day surgery, and those who will be admitted.
I would be astounded if they only kept you for 24 hours after an SAH...you should call your doctor and make sure he/she agrees with this. It took me 4 days to get to the point where they were confident that I could safely go home (SAH/BSO). They need to make sure your bladder and bowels are working, your pain is well-managed, your lungs are clear, and that you will be able to walk and get in and out of your own bed at home (hint: ask for a Physical Therapist to help you learn specific techniques for getting in and out of your bed at home...unless you have one of those lovely hospital beds at home, it can be tough!)
Best wishes for Monday...mine was nowhere near as bad as I had imagined it would be, and I am so glad I finally had the surgery!

Re: 23 hour stay?
Over here in Oz, when you first arrive for your Op they send you to the Day only ward reagrdless .......... after your "dressed" you go to theatre then then the recovery ward then into the Surgical ward if you arent a "Day only patient" I would say is a "time saver" even thou they are aware that you are required to stay for a few days....

Re: 23 hour stay?
I was stunned to hear that I would be in for one night for my abdominal hysterectomy. But the week before surgery, I got a courtesy call from my insurance (Aetna) and the person told me that I was approved for 2 nights and could stay longer if there were complications.
My doctor was willing to send me home after one night, but he wanted me to pass gas or have a BM first and I couldn't do either so I stayed the second night.
They won't send you home if they don't feel you're ready. Trust the medical professionals to do the right thing.

Re: 23 hour stay?
My 23 hour stay was more than that yet all my paper work said the 23 hours. So hospitals may work it out that way. They clocked me in at 9:53am. Clocked me out 9:53am the next day. My surgery was at 1pm, I was in post op by 4pm and not in my room until about 7pm I think. We did not leave the next day until about 5 pm. So that is 25 hrs from my getting into post op.
My leaving was all based on how I felt and what my Dr. thought. She asked if I felt ready to go home. I had been walking and passing gas and going pee on my own. I was not using pain medication other than ibuprofen for my last hours in hospital and had support at home so knew I was ready.

Re: 23 hour stay?
Thanks again everyone! Tomorrow is the big day. My stomach is doing flip-flops. I've been thru this before for other things but this is much more invasive than before. I do remember my doc telling me I would be in the hospital for 2-3 days. I asked her to promise I could be out by New Year's Eve Day. She said I should be home before then. I want to start off 2010 with a good start. I should be back on in 2010.
Happy New Year everyone! Georgianna
