Upcoming hysterectomy 1/16: Fibroids, gas and never quit bleeding (do these symptons disappear after surgery?)

Hello All,
I was diagnosed last year with 3 - 4x4x5 cm fibroids. Two on the outside and one in the inside. Can this size cause symptoms of severe gas after eating, always feels and looks like my abdomen is pushed up making me uncomfortable to sit or bend forward. Periods seems to always be bleeding and spotting like 30 days in a row.
Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. I am scheduled for a TAH with fallopian tubes to be removed, hope to leave ovaries. Do these symptoms disappear after surgery?
Thanks for listening.

Re: FIbroids, gas and never quit bleeding

Hi country dame - to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

Here is an article that may provide information: Fibroid Symptoms. This comes from a relatively large library of Uterine Fibroids Articles .

I had a very large complex ovarian cyst (12x9x11 cm) and numerous uterine fibroids. I was asymptomatic, beyond the cyst pushing my stomach out and my uterus, bladder and other organs around. My uterus was also swollen with fibroids. I would have an urgent need to urinate. I attributed that and the swollen abdomen to age. Once everything was removed (I had a TAH BSO) my bladder was much happier. My stomach went back down to normal once the swelly belly was gone (after about 3 months).

Obviously, the bleeding will disappear after your surgery, as well as the extended abdomen. If the gas is caused by the fibroids, which the first article indicates that it can be, that should disappear as well.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/16: Fibroids, gas and never quit bleeding (do these symptons disappear after surgery?)

and greetings from a fellow fibroid sister!
My fibroid contingency included a jumbo grapefruit pressing on my bladder, so I also had an urgent need to urinate; I had to wear incontinence pads because I was never sure whether I'd make it to the bathroom in time. I also had digestive issues, which my family doctor attributed to my enlarged uterus - about the size of a 22 week pregnancy - pressing on my stomach; I'd feel seriously bloated after a small breakfast. And to top it all off, I also had hemmorrhoidal bleeding from a smaller fibroid pressing in my Iliac vein - the one that comes out of the small intestine. After my surgery, the first thing I noticed was that I was sleeping through the night without all those 3 AM bathroom runs; after the usual post-op digestive issues had resolved a few weeks later, I noticed that my digestion had improved. Now I can actually go places without always wondering where the nearest bathroom is, or carrying a purse full of tampons and incontinence pads, and I hope that you'll see similar benefits. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery!

Upcoming hysterectomy 1/16: Fibroids, gas and never quit bleeding (do these symptons disappear after surgery?)

I agree with both responses! I just had a TAH on December 4th so I’m new to this and still in healing mode, but I’ve already noticed huge improvements in quality of life. I had massive fibroids all growing outside my uterus....the largest was 15cm & the other two orbiting like two moons. These fibroids pushed my belly out and squished my organs in super uncomfortable ways. I wrote off as ‘normal’ because they’re growth was so gradual. I had lower back pain all the time and always needed to pee. Post surgery I already feel WAY more room—although my organs & digestion are still trying to figure themselves out and there’s still swelling. The lower back pain is gone. I don’t have to pee all the time. My belly, although swelly doesn’t feel the same ‘fullness’ as before. Less bloated and heavy feeling. I’m so glad I went ahead with the surgery!

Hey,
Thanks for all your help and I too hope that I can rid get of the symptoms I have had for a year and a half. I hope the GERD issues and bowel issues also disappear and I will then never look back, but I am not that far yet!

So glad to hear that everyone is feeling better! I’m living the same symptoms and @country dame we have the same surgery date! I’m nervous and anxious but am trying to focus on the outcome. Right now with all these symptoms, I can remember how it feels to feel good. I too am contributing my belly to age, but at the end of the day I feel 9 months pregnant! I’m so hoping that the surgery fixes this - it pretty miserable. Thanks again for the posts. @country dame I wonder if we should compare notes after?

Absolutely! I hope that both of us can be symptom free after surgery. The symptoms came on slowly and have even changed over the course of a year and a half. Bending for a while would feel like something clunked inside of me. I avoided doing that as much as possible. My navel is not symmetrical anymore from side to side. Best wishes for your upcoming surgery and hope to be in touch.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/16: Fibroids, gas and never quit bleeding (do these symptons disappear after surgery?)

Me too overtime but the last few months have been dull cramping everyday for the most part. Some spotting (I had an ablation 4 years ago but it seems to be failing). I have 5 fibroids of all types with one measuring over 6 cm! I too have a weird feeling when I bend too much (usually to put shoes on) in that I have like a rock in my pelvis. I thought I was imagining it. Also peeing sometimes if difficult. I guess the fibroids are pressing on everything. I've asked the dr to take pics just so I can see what the heck has been going on in there.

I hope you have a quick recovery and that surgery goes as planned. It's scary, but I keep telling myself that things will be better after. Current situation isn't great, so I have to try to fix it somehow. I just wish there was more research from doctors about these issues and this operation didn't have the stigma that the name carries with it!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/16: Fibroids, gas and never quit bleeding (do these symptons disappear after surgery?)

I agree but the medical world functions at a different level and tone then we do! I don't have the bladder issues I had a half year ago where every trip outside the house I had to find a bathroom somewhere.. I have more trouble now with BM's so I wonder if my uterus is now tilting a different way.Time will tell I guess. My back is always sore the last year.
Good Luck with your surgery, I see they will do yours laproscopically. I was told this was not possible for me when she did an internal examination. I have no clue why because your uterus sounds larger yet then mine.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/16: Fibroids, gas and never quit bleeding (do these symptons disappear after surgery?)

Your constant spotting will definitely go away. The gas may or may not get better, depends on what actually causes it. I had some weird bowel related aches and pains from my fibroids. I went through an extremely gassy period post op when i farted more than i ever have in my entire life, but now my bowels are doing better than they have in years. As for the swelling and uncomfortable fullness - i no longer have a watermelon sized uterus poking me in the lungs every time i bend forward, but my abdomen is currently swollen and uncomfortable and i'm just as big-bellied now as i was before surgery. I'm hoping that this will pass. Time will tell.
