daVinci Robotic Hysterectomy
Age at Surgery 47
Location: TX usa

Total Hysterectomy due to large and numerous fibroids. Suffered for several years. Fibroids grew greatly when I became extremely stressed at work over a 2 year period.
Was also on birth control pills for several years which may have made fibroids grow.

I stayed in hospital one night. They wanted to release me a few hours after surgery but my Mom fought for me to stay. During surgery, my blood pressure dropped extremely low and my Mom knew that. She was my advocate.

Physical recovery was ok. But mentally...
I had a breakdown a few days after surgery, due to finding out I could have kept my cervix.
A year later, I am still distressed.

I would have been ok with a partial hysterectomy (keep cervix). My mental health has been very poor due to not knowing about this option. I was a candidate for partial as well.
I'm sexually dysfunctional after surgery. This has had a tremendous effect on my self esteem.

The most important thing is knowing what can stay. Most doctors don't disclose when the cervix can be kept. I would like to see this as a required disclosure.
For ovaries as well. Doctors should disclose anything that can stay, regardless of their personal preference.
