prolapses after surgery?

My surgery is in just one week. Getting scared. A lot of questions are popping up in my head. I have 3 pages of questions to ask my gyn. tomorrow at pre-op. Anyways, I was thinking about prolapses, which is my main problem. I was wondering if women who had a hysterectomy, a while back, has had any problems with prolapses since their surgery. Especially the women who had the hysterectomy because of prolapses. Is this something that happens often after surgery?

prolapses after surgery?

Hello Donna

I had a TVH with posterior repairs done 3 1/2 years ago due to prolapse. I just had an anterior repair done 3 weeks ago due to my bladder prolapsing.

I think it is pretty common for the bladder to prolapse after a hyster because the uterus is no longer there for support, but I see you are having A&P repairs done along with your hyster. So I would think you should be good to go for quite a few years. I've heard on average that the A&P repairs last 5-10 years depending on the procedure used to repair the prolapses and the amount of strain a women puts on her body.

I was pretty rough on my body the last few years as far as straining activites, we have been remodeling a house so I have been doing a lot of heavy lifting, I'm sure this contributed to my bladder heading south.

So just be good to your body and allow yourself a good recovery and then try to avoid heavy lifting, constipation and anything else that can cause strain on the pelvic floor on a regular basis and I bet you will be good to go far beyond the 5-10 year mark. Be sure to ask your doctor about this as well and if he/she has any suggestions on avoiding prolapse in the future.

As for me, I think I've learned my lesson. I plan to avoid lifting anything over 25lbs. as much as possible from now on...just to be on the safe side
