Re: Tah in two week and so scared
Breathe sweetie. I've had several abdominal surgerys and each one has been a little different Each time I was put under. I do not remember anything except them telling me to count backwards. Your doctor will come in to see you and answer questions before you are taken back. For me when I awoke in the recovery room I was in discomfort. But the nurses gave me my pain medicine right away. After I was stable they moved me to my room. I say I was in recovery about 2 hrs.y husband was in my room when I got up there. I slept most of that day Everytime I woke up in pain they gave me my pain meds threw my IV. I wore a hospital gown, granny panties ( bikini ones are a no no) and a bra. I wore light clothes to
Come home in. I saw no need to wear my own gown since being hooked to an IV the hospital gowns are made for things like that. I had my TAH on a Monday and I came home Thursday.
Don't worry about being put out Hun. They will watch your vital signs very closely. When you wake up you will be a new lady, pain free!!!

Re: Tah in two week and so scared
Hey Barbara,
I had my TAH yesterday. I'm in the hospital until tomorrow. Let me tell you, I don't think anyone is more afraid than I was yesterday. I cried. I told them I wanted to cancel. But I had a good team around me. Once they got my IV in, they gave me something. I remember the epidural going in and that's it. I don't remember being rolled into the operating room, I don't know if I counted backwards. I woke up and wasn't even sure the surgery had been done. All that to say, the nerves I experienced before the surgery were for nothing. It was okay once I got the IV in. I'm glad I did it. I promise you, you'll be fine. I know it means nothing now because it meant nothing to me either before yesterday, but you'll be fine.

Re: Tah in two week and so scared
I had a TAH and was scared to death. I had never been in a hospital. When I went in, everyone was so kind and understanding, the nurse got me ready. 2 anesthesiasts and a nurs anesthetist too. My dr came in and another dr. I remember being wheeled to the or and vaguely thinking that it didn't look like on tv. The next thing I knew, someone asked if I would mind being on the maternity ward and I was rolling thru the halls to my room where my husband was waiting. I was fairly alert and in no pain. They had me up and walking after a few hours, got the catheter out that night and the iv came out later that night. I never needed to take any pain meds at all. My recovery was quick and pretty easy. I was left wondering why I hadn't done this much sooner!

Re: Tah in two week and so scared
hey gal...it's going to "not be easy" but probably easier than you think...I am now 4 months...post op TAH...re being put to sleep (not sure what you mean by again) but all that happens is you usually receive something to relax and you wake up and can't believe it's all done and completed...
it's a funny thing...missing the time but nice when you realize
it's done and over...I had a lot of nausea for first two days but the pain , for me, was minimal...I always say I've had worse dental pain...I stuck an ice pack on my tummy wheni got home and left it there for about 3 weeks...the only recovery issue I had was extreme fatigue and really..it went on for two months...but is gone now...I'm normal again and (maybe this will be encouraging) my belly is flatter than ever and I have not regained some pounds..but actually I am thin so never needed or wanted this. I pretty much slept on and off for two months..naps, early nights, but began to enjoy my time off work..read my favorite magazines, watched my favorite shows, wrote emails...can't say pain was a big deal..the swelly belly I had for maybe 8 weeks was annoying but not painful...I really used other women on this site for support and they were wonderful...I didn't have the constipation problems etc...it was way easier than I'd thought..adhesions, fibroids (which I had) are very common...if all goes acc' to plan there should be no drain
...from what you've said, anyway...realize these operations are done everyday and think how many go smoothly in so many operating rooms and how..in an operating room..really..if anything happened there is every piece of equipment there. I am now once again myself...am active
and don't have the pain from that nasty big fibroid...
I had everything out due to my age and large fibroid and didn't have menopauseal issues as I was thru menopause..
different I thin k if you aren't...I had a few hot flashed next day or two despite being post menopause and surgeon said this does happen ...but they went away...it definitely is a journey and you'll find people don't really understand unless they've been through it...but use this site for support..
it's easier than you think..take care and keep posting..xo hugs

Re: Tah in two week and so scared
Call your doctor and ask for an estimated length of hospital stay. It seems to vary from country to country and regionally within countries. :-) I was told 3-4 days. It ended up being three days because by the third day, I was walking laps around the ward, sitting upright in an armchair reading *and* I was starting to get really bored. :-)
Keep it light when packing for the hospital. My hospital gave me mesh panties, hospital gowns and compression stockings to wear. On the other hand, I was really, really glad I brought:
- Slippers with non-slip soles and a lightweight, long-sleeved robe for walking laps around the ward; and
- Books for entertainment. I wasn't sure how woozy I'd be, so I brought everything from a flower catalog with pretty pictures to some light story collections to a collection of geological essays. I ended up going right through the entire series!
I don't remember anything about the surgery. One moment I was leaning forward to do an "angry cat back" for an epidural catheter, the next moment I was waking up, all tucked into my hospital bed. Someone had pulled the covers right up to my chin so I'd be warm enough. I felt peaceful and happy and cared for. (I was soooooo stoned!)
The next day I was still really woozy. The nurses got me up to walk a lap around the ward once in the morning and once in the afternoon and to sit in my armchair for a bit. Otherwise, I spent the day in bed.
The second day after surgery I was wide awake! I took myself for multiple laps around the ward and tore through my reading material. I was so proud of myself for being able to do these things!
The third day, as I said, I started getting bored. My doctor and I agreed that it was time to go home. :-)
I had some soreness and twingey-ness, but never any real pain. I was off narcotics by the time I left the hospital and just took OTC ibuprofen after that.
