What Does Everyone Else Think

Hello everyone,

First I want to start with telling everyone how much this site helped me just knowing that there are other women going through the same things I am...

Now I go get my Hysterectomy 2-13-04. And I have 2 younger kids one is 4 and the other is 3. My husband had to take off work to be with them when I'm in the hospitel. So I was woundering how everyone was feeling when they came home. Cause my husband has to go back to work the day after I get home and I will have both kids on my own. And I don't know if I will be up to all that.. Maybe I'm thinking it will be more painful then it's really going to be... So if anyone could get back to me and let me know how they were feeling that would help me out alot..... thank you......

What Does Everyone Else Think

Your profile doesn't say what type of surgery you are having, I think that is going to make a big difference. I had a TVH on 1-14. I don't think I would have been up to handling two young kids the day I came home. ( I had the surg on a Wed and came home on Fri morning though. ) If I had had an abdominal incision I don't even want to think about it. Is there anyone that you know in the area that could help out? Someone from Church, preschool or a neighbor. You might need it for a week or so. My kids are older(13, 10 and 7 ) so they are in school during the day which has given me time to rest and hubby's home on the weekends to help. You might be fine but I would plan for the worst case scenario and try to have help standing by.

You may want to order the Land of Hyster book that is available at the online store of this website. I ordered it and am now in the process of reading it. It has really helped me understand what to expect and what I need to do to (and avoid) so I can heal properly when my time comes.

If I were you I would find someone to help out with the kids - friends, family, neighbors...maybe even find a daycare that they can go to during the day for the first week or so.

You want to rest as much as possible so you can heal.

What Does Everyone Else Think

Hi

I had a TAH and for the first two weeks I was a total couch potato. I slept a lot, and I wouldn't have been all that aware of what 2 little kids were up to during that time. It wasn't the pain, it was the exhaustion. The body requires a tremendous amount of energy to heal after this surgery, and that is what makes you need so much sleep.

After the first two weeks I was better each day. The suggestions about trying to find someone to come in and sit with the kids, or even sending them to day care for a couple of weeks is advisable.

Best wishes.

What Does Everyone Else Think

Dear Sunnymeadow,
I had a tah/bso, was in the hospital for 5 days, and there was absolutely no way I could have taken care of anyone other than myself for at least a couple of weeks. My mom came in town to take care of me, and I really needed her! Don't underestimate a major surgery!

You'll need help!

Sunnymeadow,

You'll be a very when you get home, and it'll take at least a few days for that to get better. And don't forget the from the pain pills.

My first week at home was a bit rough, and I can't imagine trying to keep up with 2 pre-schoolers at the same time. You won't be allowed to lift more than about 10 lbs either (your doctor will determine what restrictions you will need).

Please arrange for some full-time child care of some sort; you'll need time to rest and start healing! Think of yourself first.
