megaloblastic anemia after hysterectomy?

Has anyone here experienced megaloblastic anemia post hysterectomy with oophorectomy? I am waiting on diagnosis, but it looks like it may be heading that way (I hope, otherwise it is something more serious).

Thanks for your input.

Re: megaloblastic anemia after hysterectomy?

Hopefully, it turns out to be something easy to diagnose, treat, and cure.

Maybe it's from a B-12 and/or folic acid deficiency?

God's blessings and perfect peace.

Thank you... I hope it is from one of those too - the irony is that I supplement with both daily, so that worries me a bit...

Re: megaloblastic anemia after hysterectomy?

I agree that it could be a deficiency of Vitamin B12 or folate. As we get older, our production of stomach acid drops, along with production of intrinsic factor that is required for proper absorption of Vitamin B12. If you have any digestive issues or eat very little animal protein, those factors can also put you at risk; I'm vegan, and even though I regularly consume fortified foods along with a supplement, I have my B12 levels and Complete Blood Count tested regularly to make sure I'm getting enough. If testing shows that you do have a deficiency, you may need to have B12 shots, which can be more effective, because they dont have to first be processed by your digestive system. Here's hoping you find the answers you're seeking!

If you're using a tablet or capsule instead of sublingual B12, the same stomach acid absorption issues with B12 from food can prevent absoption from supplements. Sublingual (under the tongue) is as close to directly into the bloodstream as you can get OTC, and can be the difference between supplement effectiveness or ineffectiveness.

Also, there are differences between the methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin forms of B12.

God's blessings and perfect peace.
