DIM with Premarin vs DIM alone?

I have been doing a lot of research on this DIM product. I really would like to try it, but I am really confused on how to take it. I am only 26 and had a total abdominal hysterectomy in January. I also had both ovaries removed. I was prescribed Premarin and quit taking it a couple months ago. I just didn't feel it was safe. If I want to start taking DIM, do I need to start taking my HRT again with it? Or should I just take the DIM alone? This is what confuses me. Would the DIM be effective if taken alone?

Re: DIM with Premarin vs DIM alone?

By "effective", what do you mean? Why do you want to take DIM? What's your understanding of how it works, and what does your DR advise about this?

What about Premarin did you not feel was safe? There have been zero studies showing any 'danger' from Premarin unless you have an underlying health condition that contraindicates the use of any estrogen. There are also plenty of other options as far as estrogen replacement go.

I'd work with your DR to determine what your body needs most... you are very young to be without estrogen for many years. There are consequences to lack of hormones that you need to think about in terms of your long-term health.

Re: DIM with Premarin vs DIM alone?

Well I have been reading that DIM can help with the prevention of certain cancers. I had adenocarcinoma in situ. Obviously from hpv. I have read that it can help with keeping hpv in control and keeping it from changing to cancer. Of course I know it isn't a cure but it does seem very helpful from everything I have read. I quit taking my premarin because I keep hearing of the risks from it, such as breast cancer. Breast cancer just so happens to run on both sides of my family. I haven't discussed this with my dr. I don't think he would know anything about DIM. He's a regular ob/gyn. Unfortunately I never saw an oncologist for my AIS. My dr does not seem very knowledgable when I ask questions. That's why I was trying to get some advice on here about the DIM.

Re: DIM with Premarin vs DIM alone?

As I said before, there is no data supporting the notion that Premarin increases your risk of breast cancer. The WHI study data where the group had an increased risk was for women on Prempro, NOT women on Premarin. The women on Premarin actually had a lower risk (though not statistically significant).

Breast cancer risk has many components. Family history is just one of them. Actually, most of us who have had breast cancer have had NO family history (myself included).

Please, you are very young... make the investment in your health of finding a DR who understands this stuff to help you make your decisions about your own individual risks. If you are not on estrogen and take DIM, it will even further lower your body's natural estrogen levels. This may lower your risk of certain cancers but it will also greatly increase your risk of several other conditions which can also kill you. You need to look at the whole picture.

Re: DIM with Premarin vs DIM alone?

Yeah I have been looking into other doctors these last couple weeks. I do need to go somewhere else. Thanks for clearing that up for me about the risk of taking DIM alone. That's exactly what I wanted to know. I have an appointment with my dr on Halloween. If I were to try to discuss taking DIM with him, is there anything you know of I should ask or mention? Such as if my Premarin would need increased while taking DIM? Im just unsure of what all I need to know. You seem very familiar with DIM.

Re: DIM with Premarin vs DIM alone?

I would just ask what your individual risks and benefits are of using DIM, Premarin, both together or neither one. If he can't/won't answer the questions I'd look for another DR - you have many, many years ahead of you and you don't want to set yourself up to jeopardize your health.
