Sinus infection/flu before hysterectomy

So luckily my hysterectomy isn't until May 9th! I woke up with horrible head congestion waterfall runny nose, and sneezing like no other and throat only hurts when I cough or sneeze! So I'm thinking it's just sinus related because I haven't been running a fever! Thank goodness! Any other sisters out there who came down with a severe cold or sinus issue before their surgery?

Re: Sinus infection/flu

I take Claritin 365 days a year for allergies and was able to take it the morning of. You may want to inform the doc now, from what I understand if your cold/allergies affect your breathing, they will postpone. They may want to put you on something now.

Re: Sinus infection/flu

I had bronchitis in December. At that time I was doing tests and planning my hysterectomy. My GYN said if I got an infection she'd provide antibiotics. If it's allergies to take Zyrtec. So contact your GYN.

You can't be sick and go through this surgery. Infections spread. And you can't cough well when your insides are so jumbled. It hurts!

Re: Sinus infection/flu

You do not, I repeat, NOT want to be coughing or sneezing after your hysterectomy. Even if the rest of you is 100% recovered and feeling fine. Every cough or sneeze is like a knife in the gut, it's no joke, and there is no way to control it. Even the couple of times I had to cough due to mucus in my throat after the surgery were agony. I learned how to clear it in a way that made me sound like I was a 97 year old man barfing up a hairball. I didn't care, coughing was BAD.

I stopped getting sick when I discovered lipo-spheric vitamin C. I mean I can be surrounded by an office full of winter coughs, colds and disease, and don't even sniffle. Worth being made fun of for the alien pus supplements I take. I was so scared of getting sick before my surgery I doubled up on it for the week prior.

Re: Sinus infection/flu

Your surgery can be postponed if you are sick before your surgery. But, I would think by May you should be fine. If you start to get sick before your surgery, give your doctor a call. Sometimes they can give you something for it. Just be careful of the OTC meds - they can be restricted. Even vitamins can be restricted so it is always best to ask.

Re: Sinus infection/flu

Thanks guys! I went to the urgent care here and got put on cephalexin for sinus/upper respiratory infection. Took two already today and woke up from a nap and feel great! My nose stopped running also! I just want to be completely better by May! Which I know I will be! I have been drinking OJ also and I hear vitamin c is great also! Thanks for all the help! If I feel it coming back closer to my surgery I'll give my dr a call!!

Re: Sinus infection/flu

I got sinusitis last week. I was put on antibiotic and feeling better...but the cough and hoarseness is still there. My surgery is scheduled for April 3rd....will it be okay....I have used medical leave request that's had to be put in a month in advance.

Re: Sinus infection/flu

I believe you'll be okay as long as you can breath with out tightness. They can give you breathing treatments while in the OR to stop the coughing! Good luck! I'd drink a ton of fluids, and fruits and veggies and drink warm tea with honey go help with the scratchy throat!
