Upcoming hysterectomy: Pros and cons to keeping ovaries

I'm due to have a hysterectomy in just under 2 weeks and I'd like to know any pros and cons to leaving the ovaries. The doctor has said that down to my age they would prefer to leave them intact

Re: Pros and cons to keeping ovaries

Ovaries in means most likely not surgical menopause, but still chances of adhesions, cancer, etc. If you are pre menopausal your body is still needing hormones to prevent other issues,, and there are risks with hrt if they are taken out. Bottom line its a personal decision you should make with your dr. If you have cysts or cancer, risk vs benefit may make it worthwhile to have them removed. Its a tough call.

Pros to keeping: gradual, natural menopause some day vs. instant, surgical menopause requiring hormone replacement therapy.

Cons: you will likely still have PMS symptoms...but in my mind that's nothing compared to instant meno.

I have always heard that you should keep them if you can, unless you have ovarian cancer in your family or have already been thru meno.

You definitely need to talk with your doc because there are a lot of factors that are unique to every situation.

Re: Pros and cons to keeping ovaries

One other thing is that there is some research to indicate that ovarian cancer actually starts in the fallopian tubes, so removing the tubes may cut the risk of cancer.

I kept mine as well, and am happy to have done so. I don't have cancer concerns or PMDD, though. Everything else was removed -- uterus, cervix, tubes -- and I don't miss them one bit. I'm 48, and was 47 at the time of surgery.

Re: Pros and cons to keeping ovaries

Do ask, but since the tubes are attached to uterus and serve no purpose other than transporting egg, they are typically removed with uterus.

Re: Pros and cons to keeping ovaries

I chose to have mine taken out (I'm 32 y/o) due to cysts. I am on HRT and I prefer the HRT to my PMDD any day! I will only have to take HRT until age 51 years old when I would have naturally gone into menopause. It is a personal decision, but I decided for me, the risks of keeping my one ovary I had in was too high. GL!!!
