Pre-payment prior to surgery? Pre-payment prior to surgery?

Pre-payment prior to surgery?

I've noticed on several threads where sisters are being asked to pay an amount up front prior to surgery *blank stare*.

I work at a hospital and have NEVER heard of pre-payment before surgery. Is this something new? And have most (if not all of you) been required to do this at your pre-op appointment?

Re: Pre-payment prior to surgery?

Yes, they asked my to pay the entire bill at my Pre op. Seemed odd and caught me off guard but I guess I understand, they need to be paid.

Re: Pre-payment prior to surgery?

Wow!!! They typically bill the patient for any remaining balance so I'm quite surprised at this.

Re: Pre-payment prior to surgery?

I got a hospital grant that covered 75%. Then I had to pay $1750.00 also and then I will be billed for the remaining and make payments to them.

Hi Leav,

Im a little confused at the 1st line of your post - did you mean to say that the grant was covering 75% & that you would in turn cover the remainder?

Yes the hospital grant does cover 75%. Then I am to pay the remaining 25%. The hospital told me I had to pay $1750 before I had my surgery which I already paid it. So the remaining amount I have to pay over time is about 3000.00

Re: Pre-payment prior to surgery?

I have to pay my doctor $200 at my pre op appointment, but that is all I have been told so far. Hoping that the hospital will just bill me and I can make payments to them.

Hi Storie310,

$200 doesn't sound bad at all but from what others are saying on other threads, they've had to pay an upwards of $6,000+ and more.

I've had 4 myomectomies (last one in 2009) and a UFE and have never, ever had to pay anything up front OR to the doctor in advance of the surgery. As a matter of fact, everything (including the anesthesiologist) was completely covered and all I had to pay were copayments for any diagnostic testing I had done. This is definitely something new or shall I say something 'new' to my ears and warrants further investigation on my part prior to setting my date.

They asked me about pre-payment and I asked to be billed for it and they were fine with that. I didn't pay anything up front

Good for you Christinaotto! From the looks of some of these threads, it doesn't appear that others have been quite as fortunate.
