Geez, I feel stupid

what is a vaginal cuff? I guess I didnt really ask what the Doctor was putting in, just worried more about what she was taking out?? I have my first post op on Monday.... I have a TVH and kept my ovaries. So, does that mean I had to have a vaginal cuff?
I feel stupid asking, but I guess this is a lesson to be learned that ask more questions beforehand on what they are doing.

Vaginal Cuff - What is it?
Date : 03-11-2005 - 02:41 PM - Readers : 17403

What takes the place of the cervix? I mean, if the surgeon removes my cervix, how is the vagina closed at the top?

The vaginal cuff is created by the surgeon, at the top of the vagina, where the cervix used to be. Think of a tube sock, and how it is sewn at the toes, and you will have a pretty clear idea. Creation of the cuff does not usually result in a dramatic shortening of the vagina.

There may be some very minor reduction in length (some studies report one quarter of an inch), but in most cases it is not noticeable either by the woman or her partner.

Keep in mind that the tissues of the vagina are very flexible and even if there is some reduction, with caution and practice it will stretch and should not create any problems.

If your vaginal cuff doesn't heal properly, the doctor may treat it with silver nitrate to cauterize it and encourage healing.

Thanks! That was a good explanation. I have heard it several time on here and really didnt remember the doctor telling me about it. But that makes perfect sense. I guess the big thing this... where in the world do they get some of these names?

Thanks for the excellent definition of the vaginal cuff.

I finally understand too!

And guess what, I finally understand, I don't have one as I kept my cervix.

See...there really isn't a stupid question.

I am still confused. I don't have a cervix-so do I have one of these? I hope this is not a stupid question as well.

When I asked my doc what a vaginal cuff is (after seeing it mentioned here so much), he said "it's just the way we sew up the vagina".

I am glad I asked this. I wanted to a few days ago, but felt kinda stupid. I figured that was something everyone knew but me. I guess one thing for sure... all of us here have something we need to ask and should just ask it!!

Frizzlefrog...if you had your cervix removed then yes, you have a vaginal cuff.

It is called a cuff because the way the skin is folded over and sewn it looks very much like a shirt sleeve cuff, I guess..only sealed at the end.
