Had hysterectomy this morning (9/21): Bothersome gas; what to do?

I'm wondering if it's OK to take Gas-X (simethicone). It's too late in the evening to check with my doctor; my surgery was early this morning. Does anyone have info? Other options to ease this?

Re: Bothersome gas; what to do?

the kind of gas you have is from the gas used during your surgery, not intestinal gas. gas-x won't help that. until that trapped gas has dissolved, you can be very uncomfortable. try to get up and move as much as possible, drink hot tea, a heating pad, are all things I've read here.

For me, the pain from the gas used during the surgery peaked on day 3, and then it dissipated, thanks to regular movement and peppermint tea. If you're dealing with intestinal gas on top of that, try fennel or coriander seeds for relief, either chewed straight after every meal, ground into a powder and added to your cooking, or steeped in hot water for a delicious tea; also be sure to avoid fermentable carbohydrates from legumes, onions and garlic, cruciferous vegetables, apples, pears, plums and prunes, apricots, cherries, peaches, nectarines, and sweeteners ending in itol. If your bowels haven't moved yet, that can cause gas to become trapped in your colon; magnesium from dark chocolate, leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, quinoa, and almonds can help to get them moving. Also be sure to join your recovery thread, where you can commiserate with other sisters who may be dealing with this. Best wishes for moving past this stage soon, and for continued health and healing!

Walking has helped for me and I have found that it’s easier to sit on the toilet to relieve the gas rather than trying to force it it . Who know you were supposed to fart on the toilet instead of the bed? Haha!

Hi,

Gas X did work for me, was recommended by my surgeons, found it very helpful. Also used a heating pad on shoulder/collarbone area as the gas from Laparoscopy tends to settle there.
