Upcoming 7/27 hysterectomy: Eating Night Before

Well crap, I’m reading about everybody’s bowel preps, eating light the night before, etc and I didn’t do any of that. Summer pasta salad with Mayo, tuna, and veggies. The instructions just say no solid food after midnight and no clear liquids 6 hours before. Am I in for a difficult time of it? I did buy a stool softener and Gas X. What a bonehead.

Re: Eating Night Before

Hi Bloom969 -

You are not a bone head! You did fine! Follow your doctor's orders to the letter. Everyone is different, every doctor is different. If you did what your doctor said, then do not worry about it. Some doctor's do not want their patients to do a bowel prep or be on a liquid diet the day before surgery. It just depends.

Also, under no circumstances, are you to take the stool softeners or Gas X without the okay from your doctor. Please, please ask him or her if it is okay for you to take those.

Good luck with your surgery. We will be waiting for you on the other side.

Re: Upcoming 7/27 hysterectomy: Eating Night Before

My doc cleared me to take miralax before surgery because I got IBS-C but even with that diagnosis, I didn't need bowel prep. I was told to have soup for dinner and no solid food after 6pm. But that's it! Gasx and stool softener should come in handy after surgery!

Re: Upcoming 7/27 hysterectomy: Eating Night Before

I wasn’t given any specific prep instructions either, just no eating after midnight and I was ok. My gas pain wasn’t worse that what any other members seem to experience and I did not have any issues with bowel movements either. It took 2 days and the prescribed stool softeners after surgery, but nothing that was out of the ordinary. Try to relax, you’ll be fine.

Re: Upcoming 7/27 hysterectomy: Eating Night Before

Regarding what to eat for dinner the night before surgery, my dr told me something that I haven't seen anyone else post about. She told me to eat a high-carb meal (pasta, bread, etc.)! She said I should pretend I'm an athlete, preparing for a big game. She also told me that if I woke up early enough on the day of the surgery, I should drink some Gatorade, as long as I was done drinking it 3 hrs before surgery.

Re: Upcoming 7/27 hysterectomy: Eating Night Before

The night before surgery I had salmon, sweet potato mash and broccoli. And had a scrambled egg and bacon wrap for brunch.

I focused on something high protein as I knew I wouldn’t be eating for some 15 hours!

I think everyone’s bowel prep is different. Over here for me, in Australia they gave me an enema. I was even nervous about that but two squirts up there and I was on the toilet in a minute and a half.

I don’t think you did anything wrong with what you ate! Good luck!!
