True but you can always take your cervix out later, you can't put it back.

Re: leaving the cervix or not

Very true! You can't put it back.

But still, it is a personal choice and it boils down to whether you believe it enhances sex, etc.

I don't believe I will miss mine a bit. I had a little bit of everything wrong with my ovaries and uterus - Endometrial hyperplasia, polyps, fibroids, complex mixed cysts, etc. - and a tumor - and my sister had so many abnormal paps. I already have to have mammos every 6 months because of very dense breasts and calcium deposits. So for me, it wasn't worth keeping the cervix.... whereas for someone else, it might be. I think it would be hard to know if one missed one's cervix or not.

That's where my appreciation of Weiser's post comes in. Different reasons for different choices and each person must weigh the information and take the option best for her, personally.

Re: leaving the cervix or not

For me I didn't have a choice I had pre cancer cells on my cervix so it had to come out. I know that there are studies saying different things for both sides.

I can only share my experience. I had a TAH 1 1/2 years ago because of the pre cancer, and adenomyosis. I have had no issues with prolapse, or bladder issues. Sex is as good as or better than it was before surgery. Before I would experience pain with intercourse, now that is gone. I am still able to have the big O, I think easier than before surgery.

I can also say that my Aunt that had her TAH-BSO 19 years ago. Says the same things as I do.

IMHO I say take it out. Why have to put yourself through another surgery down the road if you have issues with your retained cervix.

In the end you have to do what is best for you. All we can do on this site is tell you what we have experienced, and what we would do in your shoes. Or sometimes what we would do different if we could have a do over.

Re: leaving the cervix or not

I'm having mine removed, I've had an almost non-stop period for 3 years & want no chance of minis. My doctor also feels that it would be a good idea for the same reason. Since I haven't experienced a cervical big O in years, I don't think I'll miss it at all.

Re: leaving the cervix or not

I kept my cervix. I felt the less my doctor had to remove the easier recovery for me it would be. I am now almost 11 weeks post op Praise God!! I am glad I made that decision. My doctor told me the ONLY way you might have mini periods is if you keep your cervix AND one or both ovaries. I had both of my ovaries and tubes removed. Hope this helps. May God be with you through you surgery and recovery and ***HUGS*** to you!!

Re: leaving the cervix or not

I have had 4 doctors with all the opinions.
2 against it in keeping it; two to keep it.

Personally i will have mine removed.
#1 I cannot afford MiniPeriods (Bleeding is the problem I have)
#2 now I am younger and better health so i do not want to have it with the possibility to get cervical cancer.

Ultimately each individual makes the decition but that in a nutshel is what i will be doing, My doctor is also oncologist and he has seen a lot so. Will see, I will post to see what the final result was. My surgery is next tuesday.

Re: leaving the cervix or not

At the point of diagnosis...i could have cared less about anything but getting EVERYTHING OUT that could cause me trouble in the future......TAKE IT ALL!!!
I dont miss it now and dont think i will in the future. I havent felt anything falling...anything shifting...anything different during, or after sex.
My only concern was getting well and getting the cancer OUT.

Re: leaving the cervix or not

Since I had abnormal paps, my dr elected to take it. Less cancer issues. AND, I'm 55 yrs old (just! 03.26.11).
