I've just got home today after a 7 day stay at the castle. All is well and there are no infections. My only hiccup came on the night of day 3 when I was the only patient left in a 4 bed ward - ahh blissfully quiet.... then I noticed that the nurses were prepping the other beds and I just asked if they were day procedures for the next day? No, they were c-sections and this would be their beds after as well - babies too.

I really didn't think that hearing this would affect me, but before I new it I was sobbing uncontrollably. The thought of being in the same room as new mums and bubs was more than I could handle. I was comfortable on my decision for the hyster, I have 2 boys and didn't really see myself with more children - I needed this hyster... But still, it shook me. Nurses came from everywhere and I told them how I felt and how I didn't understand why I felt so upset. First thing the next morning I was moved - I didn't ask, thankfully they felt is was best for me to move.....

After that I concentrated on getting mobile and getting my bowel working again. My dr said that he would keep me in as long as I needed to (how long is a piece of string????) and by this morning I was eager to be home - I think that eagerness was what he was looking for. I am extremely lucky that we have this small local hosp where many surgeons come up for the day to do their ops. And as a bonus I find that for the next 6 weeks I will recieve post acute care in the form of some beautiful soul to clean and do the things I can't for 4 hours a week! The State funds this so that there aren't unnecessary readmissions after major surgery - now I feel like a princess!

And as for my silly platelets (they fluctuate madly) on day 3 of recovery I had the highest reading yet this year for platelets... I don't understand? But will see a haematologist next month to get to the bottom of this one.

Thanks for being there,

Ros

I'm sure your feelings are shared by many women. Some feel it is something akin to losing their womanhood. You didn't say how old you are, but from comments it sounds like you are still of childbearing age, and I think it's probably worse at that age.

For me, it was different. I am almost fifty, never had kids and never wanted kids, so when they placed me on the maternity ward it didn't bother me at all. Even though my hospital has private rooms on the maternity floor, where I was placed, I could hear the babies crying from other rooms and they sounded sweet, but the toddlers and older kids squealing and running up and down the hall past my door kept any thoughts on longing from entering my mind. ;-) The apparently unattended kids were so noisy that I had to ask a nurse to close my door.

Now that you are home, I am sure you will start feeling much better. You know that you will feel better now that it's all over, so keep your chin up and keep ploying ahead.

Hello Ros1970, I am so glad you are home and on the way to recovery. I can sympathise with you and what happened, I am sure the nurses and doctors don't think sometimes. I am so glad they moved you so you could get on with healing.
Wow how did you manage to get the state funded home care, any hints on how I can get it????

czardas, It depends on the health region you are in. It should be offered to you on admission - if not ask if there is post acute home care. I think each region is slightly different and I know that this region is very good. I'm at Kilmore - Hume region. But I would definately ask about it. The local coordinator came to see me in hosp and said that she likes to spoil her hyster patients as she has been there and knows the importance of recovering properly.

I like that there is a holistic approach to your general wellbeing with a long term view of saving money on readmissions and other health probs.

Hope you can track it down.
