me too!!! I am going to the castle on Friday but I did my last official shopping today and I had made a list of things I thought would be easy to prepare, eat and easy on the tummy. I have two teenagers but don't want to count on them to feed me all the time. I have a little fridge in my room and I bought apple and prune juice, dried prunes, rice pudding, little containers of cottage cheese, peanut butter crackers, yogurt, string cheese and some soup that I thought might be good. Also applesauce, canned apricot halves, pretzels and camomile tea. Also, bought a high fiber cereal too. The I got gas x strips, and a stool softener. I figured that is good eough to start with. What did you get?

nothing yet

I haven't gotten anything yet! I plan to get things for me plus make sure we have easy to prepare foods for hubby to make the kids, etc. Thanks for the suggestions - I will pick up many of those same things (except for the rice pudding and the prunes/prune juice)

Looking for Post-op suggestions - food to have on hand

Hi There,
I'm 9 days post-op now and I'm suprised how sensitive my taste buds have gotten.

I bought things like jello, soups, bread and sandwich meat, eggs, fruit juice, milk. It's not that they're simple to make, it's more important that they don't overwhelm my taste buds. I'm glad that I got all of that kind of stuff.

My 3rd day home DH made some spaghetti with garlic bread. He uses a good shake of roasted dried garlic, and a wee little shake of garlic salt. It seriously felt like I was eating a garlic salt lick. I can't take anything too salty, or too sweet right now. The next morning he made a few sausage links with breakfast. Same thing, the flavor was so strong it wasn't enjoyable. Last night he made veggie pizza on a biscuit dough. He thought it was bland, I thought it was awesome.

Oh, and Diet Coke, my only source for my beloved morning caffeine, now tastes like chemical soup. I've been pondering giving it up anyway, but between the narcotics interfering with my wanting caffeine and the taste of it, I'm taking advantage of that and getting rid of an addiction that I haven't been able to kick in the last 10 years of trying.

Good luck ladies.

thats interesting on the taste bud thing. must be the meds?
I eat pretty bland food anyhow- so am going to just stick with that plan for me- in fact am taking all my favorites to hospital with me. Dr. said it was ok. So taking Kashi cereal, healthy choice dinners, yogurt, cheese sticks and fruit. will stick to same when i get home. My plan is input good fuel to help my body heal best.
For my guys, two teen age sons and hubby, they are old enought to fend for themselves. but picked up the good old standbys of frozen pizza, hot pockets, frozen pretzels and pancakes. I stocked up the cupboards and freezer and since hubby can cook -so no worry there.
I just hope stomach isnt too upset after taking all that med. i have a very sensitive digestive system.

My best advice is no matter what you eat, make sure you drink enough. I made the mistake of letting myself get dehydrated two days after I came home from the hospital and it was not a pretty sight. I got dizzy and nauseus and fell off the toilet, then I laid on the floor sweating and finally threw up. After I increased my fluid intake, everything was much better. Make sure you drink a lot, you can get dehydrated faster than you think!

A lot of foods have been covered here. I have 2 suggestions:

1. crackers in a box. Like most (if not all) of us, I had to medicate in the middle of the night, but couldn't do it on an empty stomach. The crackers were great. They were something quick to go in my tummy, not heavy, and required no prep work.

2. food bars (like Odwalla, or granola bars). In those first few days, I didn't feel like heating anything up in the microwave. Having those bars where I could reach them were wonderful.

I really like the "fiber one" granola bars- oatmeal and choc. are great. plus they keep things moving.
my plan also includes taking my favorite water bottle. i hate the stirofoam cups and straws hospitals have.
