Question about swelly belly

This has been mentioned so many times, I am getting fearful. Is it just immense gas after surgery? I've had surgery in the past with a gas belly, but "swelly belly" sounds worse. On average, how long does it last and how do you get rid of it?

From what I have read, I dont think that there is a diffinitive time frame for swelly belly... All I can tell you is about my experience. I had a LAVH four and a half weeks ago... I had definate swelly belly for the first week or so non stop... Now I get it back whenever I do too much. I started back to work this week part time, and it is back with full force... For me, it isn't painful, but it is tender, so no tight pants or anything.... If you are a good princess and drink lots of water, go for your walks, and REST, REST, & REST you will be just fine!!! "Swelly belly" is a term that we have coined for the abdominal swelling that occurs following a hysterectomy. It has been explained by giving the example of the swelling that occurs in our ankle when we have a sprained ankle. There is a lot of work done in your abdomen and swelling occurs.

Some women have abdominal swelling on and off for several months after their hyst, especially if they are on their feet a lot during the day. But, it won't go on forever. Your tissues will heal, and eventually everything will return to normal.

One thing that is important to remember: exercise won't help, in fact it will make it worse. It's just something that has to go away on its own. It's part of the healing process.

Please also remember that everybody is different. I had a TAH on 6/21 and have not had any problem with swelling. I left the hospital in the same size underware and pants that I went in with.

I had purchased a size larger underware for swelly belly but did not need it.
