Seeing Dr on Fri about a total hysterectomy (surgical or chemical menopause)

Hi I talk to my Dr. This Friday about a total hysterectomy! I'm worried because I can't take HRT. I had a double mastectomy in Sept and still recovering from that. I've had hot flashes and night sweats for 21 years already and they are really bad now! Any words of wisdom.

Re: Seeing Dr on Fri about a total hysterectomy

Hi TJ47 -

If your doctor said you are having a total hysterectomy, that means uterus and cervix. It does not refer to your ovaries - that is called an oophorectomy. So maybe your doctor is not planning on taking your ovaries. Here is some information for your pre-op appointment.

yes your right they are going to take the ovaries completely and I do have some thickening of the endometrium wall so he might want to take whatever that's connected to . I know I won't know for sure until I see him. Thanks.
The ovaries are the one thing I know has to go and they are throwing me into menopause prematurely on purpose. I have to decide whether to do it chemically or surgically. I'm just not sure which option is most beneficial for me at this point.

Wow. That is quite a decision. Whatever is best for your long-term health. Hopefully your doctor can advise.

Re: Seeing Dr on Fri about a total hysterectomy (surgical or chemical menopause)

I am sorry you are facing these decisions. I read your other posts and see you won't have HRT. I see you tried Effexor, I wonder if your Dr tried something different and low dose? Some women tolerate other meds, I'm not sure of your experience. Also, my GYN recommends acupuncture for menopause symptoms, that might be something to look into. I hope your surgery and recovery go well, as I see in another post you've decided to proceed. We are here for support.
