Upcoming hysterectomy 3/17: post-op concerns and advice
I thought this was going to be a breeze, but now am wondering. I'm having a laparoscopic with a robot or something. Don't know if it is total, don't know about ovaries. Will be in hospital overnight. Thought I would just come home, lay around a few days and be fine. My pre op apt is next week. I'm sure I will find out more then, but now am wondering about "grannie panties" and some kind of binding, and a pillow for my tummy???

Pillow for coughing and sneezing. Hold against the tummy for less pain. Holing the pillow when going over bumps to lesson the pain. You only need granny panties if you find that the ones you wear may irritate the incision holes to get.. Mostly people with tah's wear them. You may be able to use your regular ones. Granny panties are called briefs... They call them that as that is what an older grandma may wear.. You may not need a binder. It holds everything in and helps, with pain. I couldn't use mine as it was too long and dug into my pelvic bone.

Thank you so much. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to send and receive messages. Don't know much about computers. What is a tah?

Uh, no. This is major surgery, even if you don't have large external incisions. You'll still have lots of incisions inside.
I suggest that you think in terms of laying around for a few *weeks* rather than a few days.
As for buying stuff, I normally wear cotton briefs. After surgery, I wore the older ones where the elastic was kind of stretched out. I didn't wear or feel that I needed a binder.
The friend who drove me home from the hospital supplied a flat pillow to put between my belly and the seatbelt. At home, I found that having a pillow tucked up against my belly helped me sleep on my side comfortably, which was important because I can't sleep on my back at all.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 3/17: post-op concerns and advice
Good morning, i'm 5 days post op had Dvh. The lap "robotic thing". My uterus, cervix and fallopian tubes were removed. I kept both my ovaries. I am happy with my decision to have my cervix removed. I was on the fence about that one. So far everything is fine healing great. As for things you may need. I am definitely one that needed the binder for support. It has helped me be able to get up easier and not have as much pain after moving around doing things. Also the pillow for splinting abdominal area for coughing and deep breathing exercises in hospital. Everyone's different but if i was allowed only 2 things those would be it. The soreness and tiredness is way more than i expected. So plan for lots of rest between activities. Don't over due it the first week!! Let your self heal. Rest alot and walk as soon as u can to prevent complications. Oh dont let me forget about constipation and gas. Seems to be large percent of us. If i could do anything different it would be to eat clean and have lots of fiber a wk before , if you don't already do. Also start stool softeners right after surgery. I didn't and didn't have a bm until day 4. I was not feeling to good. So add the stool softners to the list. Its better not to need it and have it, than to need it and not have it. Well i wish u the best !! Hope u figure out exactly what your doing at your pre op appt. If u have anymore questions to don't hesitate to ask.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 3/17: post-op concerns and advice
Thank you so much. I appreciate the tips and don't anticipate a lot of problems. I will pamper myself, but don't expect to need any help. I am a 74 yr old widow, so am used to taking care of myself. The tips I have learned from reading on this site have been very helpful to me

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 3/17: post-op concerns and advice
I was only 55 at the time of my surgery, but I've always lived on my own as an adult. Like you, I'm used to taking care of myself (and my two cats). I had abdominal surgery, which came with a three-day hospital stay. I found that after I was released, I had no trouble on my own.
However, there were a lot of things I got out of the way before surgery. I gave the apartment a good scrubbing, sprayed sticky windows with silicone lube and did lots of laundry. I also stocked up on groceries and household goods, as I usually carry these home from the supermarket in a back-pack and knew that I'd have a weight limit after surgery.
After surgery, all I did by way of housework was to wash dishes at the sink and scoop the litter box. I went for lots of short walks, read, sewed and worked on my computer. I stuck to flat ground for the first couple of weeks, which meant that I was stuck in my own neighbourhood, but started walking hills again my third week.
At my doctor's suggestion, I tried not to lift more then 10 lbs the first four weeks and not more than 30 the next two weeks.
All in all, I had a pretty active and self-sufficient recovery. However, it was about eight weeks before I felt 100% myself again. You may have a shorter recovery, where you're having laparoscopic surgery, but it's still going to be a few weeks.
