Got my surgery date! 11/1 at 6am! Kids mentioned...
That was fast, but I'm very happy to be having my surgery next week. I have been having a lot more pain since earlier this week, so the gyn decided to do the surgery right away Now to figure out how to get prepared for everything in only 6 days. I just talked to my doctor about doing the hysterectomy a week ago and now I'll be having it done in less than a week. But I am not very far in my researching, so a lot to figure out. He's doing a TAH w LSO, but possibly both.
So, now for my questions!
I only have help for 5 days, but I've had 4 c/s in the past, along with other abdominal surgeries. I should be okay as long as I take it easy and use a binder...right? I have 4 little ones, so a challenge is expected. But I know we'll get through it as I've done in the past.
I'm 33 years old and the plan is to take the left ovary with possible right ovary. I have horrible PMDD (severe!), PCOS, and tons of scar tissue/adhesions inside, so it's a decision I'm still on the fence with. The gyn wants to avoid surgical menopause in fear it'll be trading one set of problems for another, but I'm starting to think getting rid of both now may simplify determining future problems. If the right ovary is out of the equation, I won't have to wonder if it's causing issues, supplying enough hormones, the root of pain should I have it after surgery, etc. I'd love opinions on this one. The hope is that removing 1 ovary will cure the PMDD by reducing the hormones produced, but if leaving 1 in isn't going to do that, I want...need...both out.
Off to read as much as I can to prepare. So much to do in such a short amount of time!

I am so sorry you are dealing with this.
I cannot answer your questions about PMDD, PCOS, or your adhesions, etc. However, you will probably need more help around the house for more than 5 days. This is a tough surgery, and you will need time to heal and regain your strength. Perhaps a couple of weeks, maybe more, as you will probably have lifting restriction, driving restrictions, and other activity restrictions.
Some women think a hysterectomy is similar to a c/s, some say it is not. Here is some information for you on that subject.
Regarding keeping your ovaries, talk to your doctor about the pros and cons, given your age, medical history, family medical history, etc.
Hopefully some sisters with similar medical experiences can chime in as well.
Hugs to you.

I agree...more help will be needed! My surgery was just over 2 weeks ago and my husband took off the entire first week post-op to help out. After a couple days I thought I felt better, but definitely not good enough to do much more than take some walks. Even to do dishes at the end of the first week I would have to take breaks and sit down.
This surgery was nothing like my c-section! To be honest, I was able to do more more quickly after the c-section then with the hysterectomy. At only 30 yrs old I was expecting to bounce right back, but I was mistaken! Please don't take this as me saying it is a horrible recovery, because honestly it wasn't even as bad as I expected! It is just different. You tire very quickly, and if you do too much to soon, you will pay for it! I thought I was super woman and paid the price!
Good luck with your surgery...you will do great! Just try to see if you could get a little more help for a little longer period of time, especially with little ones!!

You are really going to need more help than 5 days especially with all those children!
With my TAH/BSO 5 days post, I was just getting out of the hospital! I was very tired and in a lot of pain. It was nothing like my two csections. Like previous posters have said you'll tire very quickly, and not be able to do much. I was 23 when I had my hysterectomy and still struggled with certain things up to about 6 weeks later. My recovery was about the best I could have hoped for but I needed a lot of help. I actually left my home and my oldest child (took my youngest as she was only 6 weeks old) for two weeks in order to have peace and quiet during recovery.
This surgery really cannot be compared to a csection or other abdominal surgeries. It's taking a very large organ out of your body and leaving it in shock to deal with the aftermath. I remember waking up from my csections and being able to cope. After my last csection I demanded to be released from the hospital less than 12 hours post to drive the hour and a half to the NICU my daughter was at. BUT After my hysterectomy I was literally banging on the sides of my hospital bed because it hurt so bad and so traumatized that I couldn't talk for a good 4 hours post. It's a VERY different surgery.
Now I had a BSO so I have no overies. I also had PCOS. My doctor was originally going to leave both in but I told him to take them out as I did not want issues in the future with them. He agreed, and I'm glad. I have had no issues with surgical menopause. I do not take hormones. A year and a half post I feel awesome, with only minor hot flashes and mood swings from time to time. But nothing like the hell that I was expecting. It will really just depend on how your body reacts.

Re: Got my surgery date! 11/1 at 6am! Kids mentioned...
I really appreciate the advice on having more help. I'm talking to my husband about it because it's going to be really hard for me to know until I get home how my recovery is going to go. All I know is that it's just 9am and I feel like my kids have already put me through an obstacle course and I'm pre-surgery! I know I won't have much help, so I told hubby last night that I'm not getting out of bed except to go potty and walk for the 5 days I have his help. Locking myself in my bedroom until I have to come out. lol I hope at least getting 5 days of total rest will help speed the recovery along because I'm not sure if I will have help after it.
