Info needed on Mirena Coil option

Hi Sisterz,
Its been awhile since I first posted to you back when I was first exploring Hyster options, I hope these lines find you well.

Ive come from a specialist yesterday who has provided me with two options:

1.MIRENA coil
2.Balloon Ablation

Id be interested to know whether anybody has tried option1.

Apparently this has been used in many parts of the world but is only as recent as 1 year old in Australia so the doc was sheepish when asked about success rate.

Have MIRENA coils been successful for you?

My bleeding {read flooding} is into its 18th day as of today hmmmm!! A record has been broken..YUK

I tried the Mirena coil. It was the last option before my TAH (in September 2001). I had multiple fibroids causing heavy bleeding and very long periods - just a couple of days off each month. I was fed up.

I had the coil fitted in February 2000. I didn`t know what to expect. Whilst it didn`t stop the bleeding completely it did reduce it to little more than spotting - but it did go on all the time. Still that seemed an improvement. DH was very understanding.

I was worried about rejecting it (I had an enlarged uterus due to the fibroids) but it hung on in there - until Easter this year, when I expelled it (over 12 months later!) with so much bleeding that I ended up in the Accident and Emergency Department at my local hospital. I was off work for a month. I had two more sessions of very heavy bleeding and had to cancel a holiday due to one of these bouts.

Sorry to be so depressing but you did ask! I would say, by all means try the Mirena - if it works it is great (I really wanted it to work for me!) but be prepared - it may be that you can`t get away with this and you may have to consider surgery at a later date anyway.

I had TAH in September and I am feeling great (apart from the sore tum and the hot flushes) I wish I`d done this sooner but I didn`t want surgery unless it was a last resort.

I can`t advise you - only tell you of my experience. Maybe others will tell you that it worked for them. I`m glad I tried the Mirena although it didn`t solve my problems and I did have to have the surgery in the end. I consider the experiment was worth it - if it had worked it would probably have seen me through to normal menopause. If you are close to that age it may be worth the try - but just be aware that it doesn`t work for everyone.

Hi, I had the merina coil fitted as my last option to reduce heavy prolonged periods. It did reduce them abit but as well as spotting at any time, i also bled for a few days each month which gradually increased. I would have put up with that but for me the worst part was the pain it caused as my uterus went into spasm each month to try to expell what it rightly recognised as a foreign body. On the day I had it fitted I ended up in A & E as I couldn`t walk, stand, move I was in soooo much pain. I was told to wait and see if things settled down but after 6 months I had it removed because of the cramping it was causing. I was pleased I tried it because if it had worked without pain then I would have put off my hyst a little longer. I had my TVH 2 months ago and am very pleased I finally went through with it having tried out all the other options over the past 10 years. Now I am feeling really well , though I still tire easily, but that is partly due to my M S and not all down to recovering from the hyst. I hope this helps you. The coil might work for you, unfortunately it didn`t for me but it was worth trying. Gina

hello i to have been offered the merina i u d.. i am really terrified of it b/c i have a blood disorder and i read on the internet that if you have excessive bleeding/ cramping and if you have hemophilia and or clotting disorders thats its not a good choice for you, and my blood disorder is kinda in between the two of those problems... my gyn says that i need to try yet another option before he will agree to a hysterectomy, even though nothing else has worked and he doubts this will either, he's concerned about my bleeding disorder and is worried i will hemorrage during surgery, which is possible, but so is bleeding tremendously during my periods, and he also said i would definatly have more bleeding and cramping during my periods for the first 3 months with the merina, like it could get any worse????!!!! i just don't understand why we must beg and plead to get things done that are needed.. i am going to talk to him again and i doubt i will go for this procedure,i'm just scared and i just want this mess over with...

I realised after posting to you yesterday that you would probably get a very one-side view of the mirena from this website - no criticism implied, but all the sisters here have had or are seriously considering hysterectomy. If mirena had worked they probably wouldn`t need surgery.

When I was looking there were several websites about the mirena and I suggest you browse whats there. I`m sure one even had a message board for feedback - you may get info from that.

I know how you feel. Like you I had prolonged bleeding - just a few days off every few weeks - it`s misery. My thoughts are with you.
