Questions for teachers
I decided to reschedule my TAH for the original date. My principal approved me for 6 weeks out, and I called about my vacation reservations...they said I can get a refund if I can't go due to medical reasons. But I am still planning to go on my trip to Japan at 5+ weeks post-op. DH is in charge of carrying the baggage. He also says he gets to pack my bag for me if he has to carry it! This will mean only one pair of shoes, one jeans, 2 shirts, etc.
After all I went through during my last period, I want to get it all done with. The only thing I am stressing about are my classes, but they will survive. They are kids. But how do I let the parents know that I will be out and that there will be a sub? I think I should send home some sort of letter about what the students should be working on and what the parents can do to support the sub. I teach orchestra grades 6-12. Any ideas?

Questions for teachers
Everything went much faster for me. The week before Christmas vacation I went in for a problem, then tests and got scheduled for 2 days after break. I didn't tell the parents. My principal had the sub come for the 2 days after the break and that was good.
You could do a search and put teacher in the engine to see how others handed this.
I have only heard from one person in my building on the phone, and another sent a card. We are more replaceable than we think.

Questions for teachers
Hi Juliebak
I'm a teacher too so I know where you're coing from worrying about the kids. I teach Kindergarten and was told last August that I needed the surgery very soon but I put it off until after Xmas break because I really worried about my new students having a sub and not me who they had meet me several times at preschool days.
Then my surgery was postponed and now set again for next week. The poor kids are so confused, one came in today and said he thought I was going to be gone. I have my year basically planned out in my head and worry that my sub. will not do what I ask. But... health is more important, so we must let go.
I did write a letter to my parents and explain that I had to have surgrey(no other details) and would be out for 8 weeks. I have a basic outline of what I want covered and am just trusting the sub to do her best.
I'll just miss my "kids" like crazy but I know the break will also be good.
Wishing you a good recovery and a great vacation!

Questions for teachers
I sent home a letter just explaining that I had to have surgery and would be out for a while. I mentioned that a qualified sub would be there, teaching our state standards and that I would be back asap, but not till I was cleared to return.

Questions for teachers
Thanks for the feedback. That's exactly the kind of letter that I plan to send; just to let the parents know that I will be out for 6 weeks and that everything will be covered by the sub. No change in grading policy or curriculum. I have already chosen all their music for the rest of the year, so that is one thing I don't have to worry about.
I am having trouble getting a sub for the high school, though, since I am only part time there. The middle school is covered. Right now, after a LONG day at the middle school I am looking forward to a break! But I know after I start feeling better I will want to go back right away. But I know better.
