Do they definitely always do a pregnancy test?

My dr. did one on me and I've had one before all my surgeries. If you want one let the dr. know. Call the office tomorrow and see what they say.

I am pretty sure it is mandatory to do a test. I get tested every time I have any procedure even though my hubby had a vasectomy. They always say we have to for legal reasons. If you are concerned call the nurse and ask, I call all the time. It is better than worrying. Good luck with your surgery.

Yes they should do a pregnancy test just to make sure. I know there was one gal on here who was going in for her hyst. & found out just a few days before that she was pregnant.

If you are pregnant they will not do the hysterectomy. That is why they always do the pregnancy test.

But why, if one IS pregnant, would they not do the hysterectomy anyway??? In my case if I were pregnant I don't think it would be possible to carry a child to full-term without either my dying or the child and me both. If one is having such a radical procedure, obviously something is really wrong, and in a lot of instances the pregnancy would be more dangerous than the hysterectomy.

Tidbit, I have always had a pregnancy test before "every" surgery up to and including the hysterectomy. You can check with your doctor to be sure.

While I've not had any children, I don't think all reasons for a hyst mean that you wouldn't be able to carry a child to term. I think it would depend on what the problem is and how far advanced the issue(s) are. Up until the time my doctor and I and dh decided on the hyst, my doctor was encouraging me to try and get pregnant, knowing that the hyst was inevitable, but as I was young he knew that I may regret not having a child. I don't think he woud've kept making the suggestion if it would've put my life in danger.

Everyone is different, so while it may be true for you, doesn't mean that it is the case for all. Your doctor is the best one to advise you on this issue as he/she is the one who knows your medical history and the reason(s) for your hysterectomy.
