TVH scheduled for three weeks....
My TVH (keeping ovaries) is scheduled for three weeks from today, October 2nd. I feel so overwhelmed with all the things I am having to do to for my job to be off for multiple weeks at a time. I am a teacher by the way and do not look forward to leaving my classroom. However I will do what the doctor tells me to do as far as taking the time needed to heal. I do have a wonderful principal that understands personally what this is like and she is cooperative to say the least. I have read everything I can get my hands on regarding the surgery, recovery, sex and exercise afterwards, etc. I guess I am most concerned not about the surgery or pain relief but the recovery. It terrifies me that while my doctor has full intentions of doing a total vaginally hystercotomy, that if he gets in there and has any issues, he will have to go through my abdominal wall. I know from everything I have read there is more, much more recovery time involved with that type of surgery. I told my husband that I know as soon as I wake up enough from surgery, I am going to be feeling around my stomach for "big bandages". Anything anyone can tell me to help relieve this stress or is it just a suck it up and deal with it issue. Thanks for just listening if nothing else. While our husbands want to understand, they just can't.

Re: TVH scheduled for three weeks....
Oh my gosh!! I completely understand how you are feeling. I have the same concern. Today my doctor and I decided it was time for TVH - October 17 is the day. Most of my life I've suffered from heavy bleeding and painful periods. About 6 years ago I had a uterine ablation. It was a great decision and I felt like a new person - no more bleeding at all. Then about a year ago I began to have pain each month about the time of my cycle - no bleeding though. In August the pain became unbearable and has not gone away since. An ultrasound showed that I have fibroid tumors in my uterus.
My doctor estimates that I may only need to be out of work a week or two since I have a desk job - thats if everything goes as planned. The plan is to keep my ovaries. Like you, I'm worried I going to wake up in recovery to find they had to open my belly up. Financially I can only afford to be out of work a couple weeks - I have just enough leave time to cover that. A part of me wonders if I should just try to hold out a few more months to build up more leave just in case. But I just want the pain and pressure to go away as soon as possible.

Re: TVH scheduled for three weeks....
I think you and I both will be pleased after our surgeries. I had an endometrial ablation three years ago myself. No bleeding for me either. In the last several months I have a pain much worse than the cramps before my ablation. It's either a constant dull pain or a double over sharp pain. My pain is due to scar tissue on my cervix from my ablation. Lets make a pact to keep in touch through hyster sisters through our surgeries and recovery.

to HysterSisters!
I am sorry you have to have a hysterectomy, but glad you found this site!
I had a TAH BSO - planned that way for me. It can be a more difficult recovery, but keep in mind that you still have quite a bit of internal healing to do no matter how they enter your tummy. Plus your body is having a major internal organ removed, and this will require rest, rest, rest, and more rest to recovery from. Did I mention you have to rest?
From the posts I have read, you will still be fairly tired even with a non-TAH. You will also have lifting restrictions (no more than 10 lbs for six weeks), driving restrictions, etc., and you will need help around the house with cooking, cleaning, laundry, dishes and more. Talk to your doctor about your job to see how long he or she would recommend for your recovery. It might be better to plan on longer time and go back sooner if you can.

Re: TVH scheduled for three weeks....
Removing a major internal organ is seriously something to consider in the scheme of recovery. I am scheduled to be out five weeks from school. I am in the process of getting everything set up though for a couple more as a worse case scenario. I know my issue will be the "taking it easy" concept. I am a go getter, exercising, college, school work, 31, teenager parent... You see my point. It will be difficult to slow it down for awhile since none of that will stop just because I'm recovering from surgery.

Re: TVH scheduled for three weeks....
It WILL have to slow down for you. You need to rest - others can take over for awhile. You only get one chance to heal right. Keep that in mind. If you overdo it you will just have a set back. You have to listen to your body. It trumps all else.
I have had other surgeries, but none left me as exhausted as this one. I have read that the only surgery more major than a hysterectomy is open heart surgery. After going through this, I believe it!

Re: TVH scheduled for three weeks....
I'm also scheduled for October 2nd and I also had a thermal ablation 3 years ago. However, I continued having periods and the pain just got worse. I'm not as worried about the recovery time though because I was informed that I will be laid off on September 28th so I'll have plenty of time. I just hope that this will stop the pain.
I'm scared about my doc having to open my abdomen after he starts also because I've had a gallbladder removal, tubal ligation, thermal ablation, and work on my intestines done so there is a lot of scar tissue. He said that he would still try the Davinci first.
I'll pray that all of us have a successful minimally invasive surgery and a quick recovery!

I really am glad to have found this site and the online support of so many others that know exactly what I'm going through and have "been there". I continue to check back here often for any new info that will ease my mind.

Re: TVH scheduled for three weeks....
I was nervous too, my TVH is coming up on Oct 17. I have decided to just go along with it, the more worried I become the worse I feel. I'm not one to preach but I am asking to be kept safe throughout this and hopefully this and my trust in my doctor will be all I need. I wish you luck and a speedy recovery.
