sit-ups anyone ?
just had a wonderful(reassurring) 40 minute phone call with my DR, who is very interested in this site,( will be sending him the printable page) and forgot to ask about sit-ups (if it wasn't written down, I didn't ask) -here is my question, remember i have a tumor that is 15x10x9 cm basically instead of a uterus (hah) & it does get inthe way at times, is it worth it to start them now, focusing on walking and swimming and eatting healthy - and suspect that with vertical TAH/BSO it will be awhile post sx until he says I can start sit-ups - ideas, comments welcome - also remind me, like he did, that I don't have to make all of my health changes at once ! ie he said not to quit coffee, cutting back is a good idea, and that he would make sure he managed my withdrawal from caffeine after surgery (with meds if necessary ) and when I was on full liquids someone could bring me dunkin donuts coffee ---what a guy!!

sit-ups anyone ?
MMMMM....Dunkin Donuts coffee! That is the BEST!
Sit ups now? Well, I would have to guess that anything that will cause any soreness to those ab muscles would probably not be a good thing before surgery - it might cause more soreness after surgery.
Just a thought, just my guess/opinion.

As long as there's not a medical reason you shouldn't do sit-ups right now, I would think that anything you can do that's healthy is good for you. Since you have almost a month before your surgery, if you have sore muscles from starting sit-ups now, the soreness should be gone by then. If you aren't used to doing them, I would probably start with only 5-10 and see how you feel and then build up from there. It's always a good idea to check with your dr first before starting a new exercise regime though.

sit-ups anyone ?
It's good to be fit before surgery...if you go slow and easy it will probably be OK. My fibroid was so huge I couldn't bend over to tie my shoes so sit ups were NOT an option for me.
If it helps you feel like you are launching your healthy new lifestyle, just check with the Dr. and then give it a try. Please just be sure NOT to rush back into anything approaching sit ups for at least several months after your surgery. The last thing you want to do is risk injury or complications from overdoing or pushing your body before it is healed!!
Good luck and we're glad you're here!!

sit-ups anyone ?
My belief is that if you can do them now you should. Don't do them if it causes any pain. Probably one of the most easy exercises to do and it helps the abdominal tremendously is to hold the ab in an isometric hold. So when you rise in the morning, tighten the abdominal and try to hold for every waking moment. If this tires you try doing it frequently but not constantly. If you train the ab to lay flat and hold in then it will be easy for it to do so.
Please ask your Dr if you should or should not be doing abdominal crunches or workouts.
Every bit of strength you can gain prior to surgery will be a feather in your cap.
Blessings<><

sit-ups anyone ?
i agree 100% with jody. i stepped up my workout program a little prior to surgery because i wanted to go into this in the best possible shape. i concentrated on doing 20 minutes of aerobics 5 times a week and did the isometric abdominal holds about 20 times twice a day. my uterous was 20 week size and a grapefruit size tumor as well; and to me, the biggest benefit i see post op is that i have an "awareness" of my abs now. i'm only 2 1/2 weeks postop, so no workouts yet, but i can feel the benefit from those exercises prior to surgery. and from day two, i was able to hold my tummy in, which really seems to help postop. not only does it help to make things feel "stabilized", if that makes any sense; but it also helps me to get back into the habit of good posture-- walking tall, shoulders back, and tummy in. and i think that really helped me. good luck, but just don't overdo. eva
