Frequent bowel movements 7 days post hysterectomy

Hi!
7 days post hysterectomy- little traumatic- started laparoscopically, 2/3 way through started bleeding too much so had to be abdominal however uterus had also fused to bladder and bowel. So very mindful of bowel movements. Have been going to the toilet 3 to 5 times a day since day 3 post op. Does come with pain when I go. Has anyone had this issue?

Re: Frequent bowel movements 7 days post op

and

Our bowels tend to be wonky post-op. Many women tend towards constipation, but not everyone. In the case where BMs are too soft or runny or there are more smaller ones in a day, stool softeners can be set aside. The addition of probiotics (like what's found in Greek yogurt or kefir) can help, along with more fiber in the diet for bulk.

However! Since you had a bit of extra work done with the adhesion of your bowel, I'd seek your doctor's input. In March of this year, I had emergency abdominal surgery for an intestinal blockage, and for two weeks I stayed with Miralax to keep the stool softer than normal and stuck with a bland, soft foods diet with low residue - something I learned about after having an intestinal bleed in Dec 2017. Low residue meant less bulk so that not as much passed through and out. That gave my poor intestines a rest and alleviated the concern of constipation.

Re: Frequent bowel movements 7 days post hysterectomy

Hello, I had my hysterectomy six weeks ago, also with some work on the bladder and bowel due to endo excision. I found what also helped me was to put a folded towel behind my back and ease myself backwards to lean against the back of the toilet so I didn’t have to use my ab muscles to sit up, this allowed me to hang out a bit longer and relax more which helped with the pain and discomfort. Good luck!

If the pain is coming because your stools are firm I would add Miralax to your daily routine. Consult your doctor also.

Frequent bowel movements 7 days post hysterectomy

What I recommend for easier bowel movements is to increase your intake of soluble fibre from bananas, blueberries, oatmeal, and psyllium or chia seeds, which works by drawing water into your stools to soften them, making them easier and less painful to pass. And speaking of water, making sure that you're drinking enough so that your urine is clear or pale yellow can also help. Regular exercise like a daily walk can help to relieve the pain by stimulating production of endorphins, which act as a natural painkiller. And last but not least, be sure to squat while you're on the throne, with your feet elevated on a small footstool, which can help by properly aligning your rectum so the poop can pass through more smoothly. Happy pooping, and best wishes for continued health and healing!
