No bowel prep!
Welp, was told today that I have no bowel prep!!
Now my next question...I'm worried about gas afterwards, and constipation. Is there anything I can do to ease that without going against the doctors orders? They told me to just eat as I normally do, but they don't know how I normally eat (junk junk junk).

No bowel prep!
I actually had to do bowel prep (and a lot of it) for a TAH which ended up to be for severe endo/adhesions. I was glad I did the bowel prep (even though it was really tough for me).
Did the doctor give you a reason why ... and if you wanted to do the prep (atleast in part) would there be harm in it??? I had to drink close to a gallon of "Golightly" and take Reglan (or something of that sort). I was thankful afterwards for it.
That was 2003 ... and I am thankful EVERY DAY for that operation and my surgeon. You will be too!

No bowel prep!
I have had good luck taking a stool softner, and eating prunes. I like prunes, so that is not hard for me to do. You just want to make sure to keep things moving along. The nurse suggested drinking warm apple juice, to help. Do you have a food, or drink that makes you go? If so by all means have it, if you aren't restricted in any way.
Also you might want to eat lightly the last few days. i.e. don't go out and eat a huge steak dinner at Outback the night before. You don't want to have a lot of "stuff" hanging around because the anesthesia and narcotic pain killers have the lovely side effect of constipation! I was fortunate as everything worked fine the next day! A tad bit uncomfortable I might add. BEst wishes to you

No bowel prep!
I had to do 2 enemas for bowel prep, it really wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. After surgery I didn't even feel like eating much for a few days. My Dr told me to get over the counter Colace when I went home from the castle, it was very expensive so I got the generic brand it was right next to it on the shelf and half the price. It worked well.
Good Luck :-)
Take care and rest after

Yes, get Colace
Good thing to remember the Colace (or generic brand) ... this will become your friend.

No bowel prep!
First of all, be sure not to take it upon yourself to take any medications for gas or constipation unless and until your doctor okays it. You could wind up doing more harm than good.
As for food, this would be a good time to kick the junk food thing and just eat healthy foods. I'm not saying go on a diet or anything. Just make sure that you have fruits and vegetables, some starch and protein, and lots of water.
Keep in mind, also, that some doctors don't use bowel prep. Mine didn't. And please do NOT try to do anything on your own, such as a liquid diet, laxatives, etc., pre-op if your doctor hasn't told you to. You could wind up getting yourself dehydrated and your surgery getting canceled on you.
PLEASE, EVERYONE, LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR! THAT'S WHAT YOU PAY HIM/HER FOR!!!!!

No bowel prep!
Basically the nurse told me not to do anything the Doc didn't specifically tell me to do. (But at my last appt the doc said someone would be calling me with the pre-op instructions.) Then said she (the nurse) would advise me to eat while I can. LOL
I don't plan on taking anything OVTC to help "clear things out", but was more wondering about things that would pass easier, of faster, so I don't have much to worry about afterwards. I have visions of straining for days afterward because I ate wrong! And since this all started I don't have daily bm anymore, more like 3-4 days apart. That's hard enough as it is, I can't imagine doing that after surgery!

I had serious bowel problems before my surgery from endo/adhesions ... now things are completely better.
I hope the same for you. The only way to move is up!

No bowel prep!
Oh, you lucky gal, Vega! Bowel prep or no bowel prep, post-op gas is unavoidable. I've never had such a good cleaning out!!! My prep consisted of drinking two containers of Phospho-soda---one at 8am and the second at 4pm. That stuff didn't stop working until the morning of surgery. If I was older, I'd have requested a colonoscopy because the "house" was so clean. The down side? Well, I have bowel tones and have had since the second day after surgery. However, because I'm only able to eat limited amounts of food, things still haven't "moved." The only thing I'm doing is passing gas. This leads to misery of its own. I take a stool softener three times a day and am looking forward to things moving along again. Best wishes on your upcoming surgery!
