How did you pick doc?
I was curious how you picked your gyn/onc? I'm currently going to an out of network doc. I've been trying to sort out the costs with insurance and the doc and am getting freaked out and I need this sorted before I schedule it.
They're like, why would you go out of network? I'm like... because he's the best in the state. I don't want to start from scratch and really don't want to go with a stranger I don't know. However, my cost will go down significantly if I stay in network.
I'm playing phone tag with the doc's business person, but was curious for your input in the meantime.

Re: How did you pick doc?
The doctor who diagnosed me with endo didn't take my insurance. Luckily I landed in his ER a few days later and he was able to treat me and because it was a hospital visit my insurance paid for it.
When I got pregnant with my first, I told him I would have to find a new doctor for it and he told me he would cut me a deal. He set a really decent price for delivery of the baby so we stayed with him. Some doctors are really amazing when it comes to things like that. It took me 7 years to find him, he made it possible for me to have children, I didn't want to leave him.
Luckily now he takes my insurance so he will do my Hyst.

Re: How did you pick doc?
I went to my primary who referred me to the doc that is going to do the surgery. He comes to the hospital where I doctor but going to the city for the surgery. Not sure how I feel about him. I've dealt with great docs and not so great docs however as someone dealing with an insurance mess i would not recommend going to an out of network provider.

Re: How did you pick doc?
I originally went to my normal gynie whom I absolutley love and adore....she scheduled mefor a TAH...I prayed and prayed and jsut was not finding peace. So I began to google, I googled day and night..literally! I finally found a Dr about 3 hrs away from me, so I made an appt, and as soon as I met with him, I knew he was the one. I just had a sudden peace all over me. He agreed it could be done DaVindi, avoiding the whole abdominal cut, he also gave me the option of keeping my cervix...which I did. On the day of surgery, he came into my room gathered the nurses and anesthesiologist and we all held hands and he prayed for me..HOW AWESOME IS THAT!!!! I had the best surgery and recovery possible, never had a drop of pain, I woke up thinking I didnt even have the surgery! It was great!!! So my answer would be do research, and get 2nd and even 3rd opinions if needed

Re: How did you pick doc?
I asked friends at work and did lots of online research (patient reviews, etc) to find my surgeon. Only after meeting him did I know he was the right one. Could your dr. give you a referral to someone in your network? Good luck!

Re: How did you pick doc?
I was very fortunate to have a doctors in the family for referrals. However when I lived out of state I would Doctor shop because it's all about if you click with each other.
As for insurance it's really not an option with me, I had to stay in Network for $$ reasons.
Good Luck!

Re: How did you pick doc?
I went with a dr that did the prcedure I was looking for (dvh) after I consulted with him and he passed the questions I aked. Along with a recommendation from my primary care dr when he found out I had received a cancer dx and I called him to get his input. My gyn-onc was in network for me.
After the consultation I was comfortable with the Dr and the approach.

Re: How did you pick doc?
Thank you everyone.
After a couple of days playing phone tag, I spoke with the woman who does billing. She said they'll work wtih me. Told me about some sort of network thing that's apparently tied in with my insurance, that <> never mentioned, that helps in preparing a proposed bid for what they'll pay and it's supposed to help my liability. She said I won't get charged for the full thing, as they know it's impossible, but it doesn't seem possible to get an exact figure in advance.
What makes this kind of worse is that I didn't realize that the out of pocket maximums are two different amounts in network plus out of network.
I'm so torn on what to do. I had two doctors tell me that the doc I'm going to is the best and one said to make it work, even out of network, because he was the best. I trust my doc implicitly.
So torn...

Re: How did you pick doc?
I bounced around and saw 13 doctors total before I settled on one. Some were in my network and others weren't. I found that reviews were helpful but I started calling and asking if I could speak to the physician I was trying to see before scheduling an appointment. If not I would leave a message with their RN/MA and talk to them about some of my concerns (I had my LAVH at 20, so I had a lot of questions before). I didn't really care about getting them all answered on the phone, but I found that if the doctor or their staff would call me back and make an effort the appointment went a lot better. I stopped seeing those who wouldn't speak to me before an appointment. I also asked all my girlfriends who they saw, even if it isn't a surgeon they usually are networked with one. Best of luck!!! If you are in Utah I'll send you to mine.. she is an ANGEL!
