Hysterectomy while having CKD

I have a quick question...I might have chronic kidney disease, the tests are being done right now. Does this mean I might not be able to have my hysterectomy. My family doctor doesn't want to clear me for surgery until the results get back. I'm scared!!!

Hi artandpeace Sorryyou are facing possible CKD. When will you know for sure? I haven't had experience with CKD myself, but found the following article:

It seems that patients with CKD are considered high risk for surgery from a cardiovascular standpoint. It also affects what medications the anesthesiologist can give you during surgery.

Thanks so much for replying to my post. I should find out by tomorow what the results are from the 24 hour urine test. I'm sooo scared. It seems like it has been one thing after the other for me. I also have what is called diastolic dysfunction of the heart too. So I don't know if this is all going to cause my surgery to be cancelled. I just want to feel better !

I looked up the information you provided and it was very suprising..I guess I will have to wait to see the results but if there is even a chance of me having kidney problems at all I don't think I'm going to have any surgery unless it's an emergency situation. It's kind of overwhelming

I have CKD, and I had a TAH/BSO back in November. I very diligently asked my nephrologist if it would be safe for me to have the surgery and then HRT afterwards if needed, and he had absolutely no problem with it.

I had my pre-op appt at the hospital and made sure that everyone was aware of my impaired renal function.

I have to tell you that I ended up in ICU for two nights because it took me so long to wake up after the surgery. Apparently the anaesthesiologist was a bit panicked because I wasn't responding to the drugs that act as antidotes to the drugs they use to put you to sleep. I assumed that it was because of my kidneys perhaps not cleaning my blood as effectively as normal kidneys would, but I was told that they operate on plenty of people who are on dialysis, and they don't have the trouble I have. Point is, I don't know if my CKD had anything to do with it. Other than that, I sailed through the surgery with flying colours, and I healed very well and really rather quickly. I was walking two miles just 3 weeks after surgery.

PS. I had a TAH/BSO because I had fibroids that bled so much that it caused me to be anaemic, which is NOT good for people with CKD! So, my nephrologist was all for the surgery. I don't know why you are having a hysterectomy, but if it will contribute to your overall good health, you may be doing yourself a graver disservice if you don't have it done. It may be that if it turns out you do have CKD, your nephrologist will want to have time to stabilize your condition before you have surgery.

Hi , well the doctor said that the protein in my urine has increased slightly more but the kidney function is fine. "We will have to just keep an eye on it" was all they said. Ok I'm happy and confused. I'm going to get a copy of my lab report to see exactly what the numbers are...
anyways the hysterectomy is still a go! I'm glad because I think it will help me overall

Oh, that's great! You have no idea how lucky you are. CKD is a terrible, terrible thing to have to live with. It's uncurable.
