Don't understand HRT

I've had numerous gyn surgical consults. All consults agreed it was best to remove my ovaries due to my age (almost 48) and most importantly 2-1/2 weeks of migraines I get around the time of my period. It's my best hope of at least diminishing or eliminating the migraines.

My migraine neurologist has said there is no reason I would need to take estrogen after surgical menopause--he knows that birth control pills have exacerbated migraines for me in the past. He said it would only be difficult to live without HRT if I didn't get rid of my migraines AND suffered with menopausal symptoms. True?!

All my gyn consults agreed with 2 years of HRT. My surgeon will work with me on the right type of me until we hopefully get it adjusted so that it doesn't cause migraines, if in fact it would if I'm sensitive to even HRT amounts of estrogen.

I asked my gyn surgeon if it would be too much of a shock for my body (I was thinking reduction in immunity, not healthy for me, etc.) to go "cold turkey" without HRT. He said he had no concerns about that, but thought the surgical menopausal symptoms would be too extreme for me to want to cope with.

What ARE the risks of HRT. I think he's proposing a very low-dose estradiol for two years. Is it worth it? Should I at least give it a try post surgery and see how it goes?

Don't understand HRT

Your DR should be your main source of info and advice, a gyn not your neurologist.

You may want to check out the No Hormone Desert Oasis to get some idea what it's like to go cold turkey after a hyst.

Best wishes, and I hope you find some answers.
