Cyst like mass

I had a CT on Friday for abdominal pain and was diagnosed with diverticulitis. My report said “cyst like mass” on my right ovary and I was given literature at discharge for an ovarian cyst. I thought nothing of this until my follow up today. My doctor clarified that this means could be a mass or something else “like a tumor.” I’ve been reeling ever since.

My hysterectomy was 2 years ago and I’ve been perfectly fine. I will be scheduled to have an u/s soon. My question is - can you get cysts after hysterectomy? I just assumed yes based on the hospital literature but now I feel dumb. She said my report from the ER recommended an u/s so I’m wondering why they didn’t do it then? It was 3.2cm so is that small? I know nothing and I’m working myself up. Any similar stories?

My hysterectomy was everything but my ovaries. Now I’m wondering if that was a mistake when I went that route. Ugh.

Adding - my report also shows air in the vagina, which Google tells me is not normal?

Re: Cyst like mass

First, take some deep breaths (it really does help!). In general, radiologists don't tend to go out on limbs with their interpretations, so if it says cyst like, it's probably a safe bet it is more like a cyst than some other process. And, most often, ovarian cysts are "just" benign cysts which can monitored for any possible changes or issues. Hopefully, the ultrasound will provide clarification on things.

We know it's difficult, but please try not to let your mind race too far ahead of your diagnosis. And, don't over-google, especially since you don't know precisely what you're dealing with and too much information can make your head spin. Sending hugs and calming thoughts your way!

Re: Cyst like mass

Hello, I really can't get into all my background, but it ALL really kicked into gear after a visit to thr ER.
My neighbor is a Dr and she read over the report... she said it is almost malpractice the way they write their reports bc they always put the worst possible case to cover them.
If you read my report, I had large holes in my hips, large amounts of blood in my culdasac and abdomen... looking this all up told me I had cancer and was going to die in 1 to 3 months. But all my symptoms I was having didn't match with ANYTHING they wrote up.
I think the worst scan I had was the nuclear bone scan.
We are here for you.

Re: Cyst like mass

Hello, there,

I've had some alarmingly worded reports as well. My cyst like ovarian mass was about 3 hemorraghic cysts together. Before that on CT they said it could be adenocarcinoma, but my GYN explained that the CT my primary care ordered isn't the most sensitive/appropriate for ovarian cysts. Usually for cysts, GYNs "follow it" for a few weeks to months. This ultimately led to my endometriosis diagnosis, but the ovarian cysts did not come back as endometriomas. I still get recurring hemorraghic cysts but they've gone away and not turned into a mass. Fibroids are tumors as well, so are nasal polyps. Not all tumors are worrisome, so I'm not sure why your doctor made that comment like it didn't mean anything. I saw a team at Mayo where the radiologists were super intrigued by an inclusion cyst I had. It had been drained during surgery and another cyst formed around it. The radiologists and tech acted like i was a unicorn and my gyn laughed and said it was just a cyst within a cyst.
Hope it all turns out well.

I'm not saying you shouldn't do anything if you feel in your body something is wrong, but I am saying that certain scans and radiologists will make comments that turn to nothing. You could have your images pushed directly to a doctor you trust and they could make their own interpretation of the cystic mass.
