Waiting for surgery date
I am 45 years old and no children I've given birth to. I am anxiously awaiting the call for my surgery date and putting things into perspective. Right now I'm trying to make the decision on keeping my ovaries or not. I'm leaning towards just having them take everything because I do not want to have to go through this again. I live with my 88 year old Grandfather who is not the most supportive person, but I do seem to have a strong network of extended family and friends (I didn't realize). I know I'm not really making a point right now , think I just wanted to put a couple of things in print. I'm starting to get a bit nervous about this as I have not had surgery before. i am hoping to get it over with this month.

Waiting for surgery date
Hi Chavonne,
I was 46 when I had my hyst and I can understand some of what you might be going through. My hyst was my first surgery ever. On a previous post, you said you have fibroids...which is what I had. Boy...they are not fun!!
You might think about leaving your ovaries if they are healthy. The ovaries secrete important hormones that help with overall health and newer studies are showing that the ovaries secrete their important hormones well into menopause...and the hormones are *free*. In pre-op, my Dr. also told me that ovarian cancer occurs in 5% or less of women...so that was good odds for me to keep my ovaries. I was not prepared to remove my healthy ovaries to prevent something that might never happen to me.
From being on Hyster Sisters, I have read that ladies with ovarian cysts and/or endo can have a higher percentage of post-op ovary removal. If you do not have either...you might think about leaving your ovaries if you and your Dr. feel they are functioning well. And old saying on Hyster Sisters is.."why remove something if it is not broken??? That can apply to the ovaries.
Hope that helps. Just do what you feel is *best* for you. That is the most important factor.
Mary

Waiting for surgery date
I am 49 and I'm going to have my doctor take my ovaries. He told me that the American Gynecological and Obstetrics Association recommends removing the ovaries in women 45 and older.
My decision wasn't too difficult. My sister has had some nasty ovarian cysts. I'm already experiencing a few hot flashes and night sweats... have had them on and off for 9-12 months.
And, according to my doc, stats show that I'd be in menopause by the time I'm 51. I did a little research and found this: "Menopause usually occurs from mid-40s to the late 50s. The average age of natural menopause is 51."
But if I were 45, that would be a very difficult decision. You may have another 5 or 10 good years out of your ovaries. And, as Mary already mentioned, there is some evidence that ovaries still have a function after menopause.
From what I've read, the ovaries stop producing female hormones, progesterone and estrogen, but they continue to produce male hormones, testosterone and androgens, which are somehow converted into a form of estrogen. I also read that after menopause, the adrenal glands also produce the testosteron and androgens that are converted to estrogen in the fat cell.
It's not an easy decision, but it's one that only you, with a little guidance and info from your doc, can make.

Waiting for surgery date
I still don't know whether I'm going to have my ovaries taken out or not either. It's a hard decision for me to make. I'm 43, almost 44 and have cysts on both. My GM on moms side had/died from cancer in one of her female parts, but no one can tell me if it was ovaries or not. If it was I think it would be easier for me to decide to have them out.
My dr also mentioned usually taking them if over 45 yrs. I have time to decide since my pre-op isn't until the 1st, surgery 5th.

Thank you all so much for responding. I have been having hot flashes off and on for the past few years but these last few weeks have been CRAZY!!!! I'm going to talk with my doctor when I go for my pre-op on the 23rd but I think I'm going to have everything removed.
By the way, my surgery date has been scheduled for July 31st
