Upcoming hysterectomy 8/11: Worried about possible bladder injuries

At my pre op last week, doc mentioned she would have to dissect my bladder from my uterus. First time I had heard this. Should have asked questions about it then but was busy thinking WHAT!?!? So, is this normal? Just part of the surgery? Special in my case? I've been trying to convince myself that the risks of injuries during surgery are smallish...won't happen to me. 2 days out and I'm awake at night worrying.

Re: Worried about possible bladder injuries

Mine is the same day as yours.
I am having TAH as I had 3 c/sections and my doc is worried that my bladder may be adhered to my uterus due to scar tissue and he wants to be able to dissect (remove the tissue between) the bladder from the uterus if that is the case.
So no it doesn't seem like it is special to you, they must do it all the time

Re: Worried about possible bladder injuries

It isn't uncommon for the uterus to have adhered to the bladder or bowels, especially if endometriosis or scar tissue is present. Very often the doctor will have to work to separate the organs from each other but may not know to what extent until they get in there. Your doctor will do everything to avoid causing any damage to the bladder but sometimes it is necessary after extensive bladder work to have an catheter for a few days following surgery. Do not worry but this is just an item to ask your doctor about prior to surgery. The ultimate goal is get to get the uterus out safely and no doubt your surgeon has a lot of experience with this. My bladder was stuck to my uterus and one of the ovaries and I did great, no damage, cath removed after 24 hours. Hang in there and good luck!
