Upcoming hysterectomy 5/9: Confused and Concerned (shedding tons of hair; two ovarian masses; hormone issues)

I've noticed I am shedding tons of hair. I've never had this problem. I have always had medium thin hair; But I've never had this much shedding or really any at all.
I have 2 Ovarian masses. One on each Ovary. My doctor recently informed me that he is certain I'm not receiving any hormones. If this is the case. Would this be a reason as to why i am shedding so much hair? Has anyone else been through this at all? I am getting a full hysterectomy on the 9th. I'm just curious as to whats happening to my body. I feel ok, but I am just noticing new things here and there. Your guys support and advice has helped me a lot. so I am hoping I will find the same with this post, Thanks ladies!

Re: Confused and Concerned

Hi KelseyFreelend -

I would ask your doctor about this. It may be related to issues with your ovaries and lack of hormones. Here is an article on hair and hormones which seems to indicate a connection.

We do have lots of ladies on this site, so hopefully one with similar symptoms will see this post and respond.

Re: Confused and Concerned (shedding tons of hair; two ovarian masses; hormone issues)

I was post-menopausal when I found out I had huge ovarian cysts and abdominal masses, as well as other charming issues, that necessitated my having a Hysterectomy.

While my hair didn't fall out in clumps, it started to thin out. As Marestail pointed out, I too think lack of hormones and non-working ovaries may be a culprit in hair loss.

When I noticed this happening, I stopped using my high heat styling gadgets and I started taking Biotin supplements. A few months after my surgery, my hair started to "recover" on its own.

Take care and best of luck on your upcoming surgery.

I've heard from a few other sisters noticing similar hair loss after having their ovaries removed, which does suggest a hormonal connection. Your hairstyle can also be a contributing factor; the tension from tight ponytails, braids or buns can damage the follicles. I've recently started noticing hair loss in front, which I attribute to years of swimming with a tight swimming cap. If this is your case, loosening up on your style will help to minimize this effect. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery!

Thank you for the tips. I do wear a pony at least half of the week. Ill try to make sure i keep it loose or wear a clippy instead. Maybe ill notice not so much shedding after that.

A couple of my girlfriends have suggested Biotin, I think Ill be getting some now, My sister thinks I'm noticing shedding bc I've let my hair grow longer than I've normally ever have had it, she said its normal. so idk. My mind has been all over the place. I use heat tools Maybe once a month, I have naturally straight hair, Im honestly too lazy to whip out the curling iron or straightener most of the time Idk, i'll keep an eye on it for now and see if it gets worse. Thank you for your tips and insight!!
