early menopause with ovaries??

My husband played golf with my doctor yesterday. (My gp, not my obgyn who will do my surgery. ) My gp told him that I might go through menopause early because of my tah. Help, is this true? I am keeping my ovaries so I thought that I would just go through it when I would have normally gone through it with out any of this hysterectomy stuff. This is what my obgyn has told me. Any thoughts??

early menopause with ovaries??

i read a lot of articles before my surgery and i couldnt find anything that proved that. there were suggestions of it but i dont think its proven. i chose to let things happen naturally and kept my healthy ovaries. just like the cervix information...there are articles that say it helps with future pelvic support and sexual pleasure..and theres articles that say it doesnt. in the end i decided to keep both and see what happens. so far i am very happy with my decision. do lots of research and inform yourself of everything that can go wrong (and right). making an informed decision is the best thing you can do. good luck!

early menopause with ovaries??

I spoke to my GYN about this and he said that it's not true. He has been in practice a long time. His nurse was the one that tried to talking me into having my ovaries removed because my mother went through menopause at 43 and I'll be 47 next week. The nurse told me that I would probably go into early menopause. But when I brought it up with the GYN he said my ovaries are healthy and there was no reason to remove them and that there wa sno evidence that I would go into meanopause early due to having my uterus removed. I had no intention of removing my ovaries and was upset with the nurse for even suggesting it, and so was the GYN.

Take care,
Lynn

early menopause with ovaries??

Hi Mekelty,

I agree with Dressedupinblue and Ksdesigns. In pre-op, I did my research also and I also saw the information about possible early menopause. In the end, I decided to keep my ovaries since they were healthy and ovarian cancer does not run in my family. I felt I would benefit overall by keeping my ovaries since the ovaries secrete important hormones that help with the bones, skin and hair to name a few.

I am 4 1/2 yrs. post-op now and my ovaries are still working great.

Sending best wishes~

Mary

early menopause with ovaries??

My GP, and surgeon, here in NZ showed me a lot of research, and I've found a lot online that early menopause can occur - but by early they mean 1-2 yrs earlier than you may have gone through it anyway.
I'm hoping my ovaries can be saved, and if I go through menopause at 50 instead of 52, well so be it
