Upcoming hysterectomy 11/4: Left ovary - Should it go too?

Hello. My surgery is one week from today. I am having hysterectomy with right ovary removal due to fibroids in uterus and cyst on ovary but can’t decide if they should just take the left one too. I am at higher risk for a couple cancers so I’m thinking they should just take it - I also have a blood concern - I went from 250 platelets down to 20 after my last surgery and ended up in ICU for 5 days so I’m a little concerned, to say the least, about having another surgery and don’t want to risk the left ovary causing me another down the road. But what are the benefits of me keeping it? What should I consider? Thank you for your help.

Re: Left ovary - Should it go too?

Hi Kdaisylady -

There are benefits to keeping your ovary - your own hormones - and not being dumped into surgical menopause, which has its own risks and side effects. Here are articles that may provide information:
Should I Keep My Healthy Ovary?
What Ovarian Hormones Do for You
25 Health Risks Related to Oophorectomy and Surgical Menopause
Natural Menopause vs. Surgical Menopause
Should I Keep My Ovaries if I Am Near Menopause?
.

Discuss your particular scenario with your doctor, including family history and personal history with cancer risks. You have to weigh the pros and cons of removing your ovary with your health scenario. Make the best decision for you.
