manicure/pedicure anesthesia question

frivolous question but -- i've seen several people recommend getting a manicure/pedicure before your hysterectomy, and i think it's a nice idea. but i seem to remember from other surgery many years ago that you're not supposed to wear nail polish because they need to see your nails for the anesthesia? is that wrong? my hyst is on tuesday and i want to schedule a mani/pedi today...

I don't think it matters. I had surgery in July for Endometriosis, and it was just a few weeks after my wedding, and I was worried that my gel nails wouldn't fall of by then, and they didn't. So I had no choice but to go to the hospital that way, and I asked the nurse their if this was going to cause any problems, and she said no. So I don't think it's a big deal, but you may want to call and ask your doctor before you get it done, just in case. Hope this helps!

I just had a medi and pedi as my Dr said it was ok

I have acrylic tips and pedi'ed toes and they said it was no problem. The nurse actually complimented me on my nice finger and toe nails

Ask before you spend the money on a nice manicure... my hospital doesn't allow it, and if you're wearing nail polish when you're admitted they will take it off. They do allow nail polish on the toes, however.

I had an ovarian teratoma (plus the ovary itself) removed in 2004, and was told to remove my acrylic nail, no polish, etc.

Had breast augmentation in 2006, and it was not an issue at all.

I had my biopsy today and asked specifically about my acrylics.. she said they may ask you to remove one or two... I asked if they could put the blood oxygen monitor on my toes and she said it wouldnt reach... Im about to be scheduled for my surgery date... one more fill and a pedi and Ill take them off... sigh.

interesting; thanks for your responses. there isn't really anyone to ask right now (my dr is away for the week) so i guess i'll go ahead and get them. if i have to remove it, i'll remove it.

I went in for my pre op and they want clear nails and no toenail polish. However the nurse said it was okay for those clear french tip acrylics. I went ahead and had mine done and its still okay to have a pedi without the colored polish. Also had a nice haircut as I knew I would'nt be able to get out and about for a few weeks. My instructions from my hospital were no nail polish or covering on either fingers or toes. I was told they may cancel surgery if I showed up with my gel nails. I had them taken/sanded off and 12 days after surgery, I was back to my manicurist having them put back on. I really missed my pretty nails as my manicurist always does an artsy design on mine. You really need to check with your hospital about what they allow.
