A couple of really stupid questions.....
The last time I saw my ob-gyn was in October. For the last few years he has strongly reccomended that I have a hyst, and I have strongly refused. I have a huge fibroid uterus that sticks my belly out and an umbilical hernia.
He did start to talk about the procedure once, before I cut him off, and he mentioned that he would want to take both my ovaries ( I do have a cyst on one of them), and that my stay in the hospital would only be one night.
Since I have seen him, my symptoms of pressure and painful periods has gotten worse. Sometimes the pressure gets very painful and I am getting sick of looking like I swallowed a basketball.
Then I found this site (thank you soooo much!!!)
I have an appointment to talk to him about the procedure on Monday. Then I will ask for my records and go get a second opinion. If I get anything done at all, it will be in December when I can comfortably take the time out of work.
So, here come the stupid questions.
Since I have no endometriosis, why would he want to take BOTH my ovaries? This is one of the first questions I plan on asking him.
The other thing that is the real reason I am babbling on here is,,,since my uterus is so big, I came to the conclusion on my own that my hyst would have to be an abdominal. But with most abdominal hysts have you spend more than one night in the hospital. Is it possible to take out a really oversized uterus with the other methods, and what methods of hyst usually require a one night stay at the castle?
I will be asking him alot of questions on Monday, but those 2 are really bothering me and I would like to know what all you princesses and princesses in training have to say....
Thank you in advance!

Re: A couple of really stupid questions.....
My doctor said because of the size of my uterus, it would have to be a vertical abdominal incision. He said, believe me, I do everything I can do vaginally, but there is no choice in this case. I have to be in hospital from Monday a.m. to Wednesday evening.

Re: A couple of really stupid questions.....
Your tummy sounds exactly like mine...a basketball size shape...with an enlarged uterus. Due to the size of my huge fibroid along with the enlarged uterus, the best way to perform this surgery would be abdominally with a vertical incision. It will give the doctor a clear view of what is going on in there. With regards to taking out both ovaries, I would suggest you discuss this with your doctor to find out if there is a valid reason for wanting to take them both out.

Re: A couple of really stupid questions.....
Both of you are saying exactly what I was thinking!
So why would he say that my castle stay would only be one night when it seems like a 2-4 night stay is normal for a TAH?
(I will know everything on Monday, but just a bit anxious)

Re: A couple of really stupid questions.....
Yes for TAH, minimum stay is at least 2 nights for observation as this is major surgery.

Re: A couple of really stupid questions.....
I go in May 10th for a TAH/BSO and removal of a 12 cm cyst and I was told I'd be in for at least 4 days possibly longer. Oh and I'm having the horizontal incision.

Re: A couple of really stupid questions.....
My uterus was about 6xs what it should have been due to fibroids. I had a total daVinci hysterectomy (uterus and cervix) and was home about 24 hours after surgery.
