2 weeks post hysterectomy: discharge with sour / foul smell - is this normal??

I am 2 weeks post-op today. Although I feel pretty good, still tired at times, and easing back into things, I do have 1 concern:

I am still getting a brownish-redish discharge that has a sour/fowl smell to it. It’s not a lot, but enough to warrant a pad. Should I be concerned or just wait for my 4 week follow up appt to talk to my doctor?

Thanks!

I’m almost 3 weeks post op and have the same issue. Was just looking to see if anyone else was having the same. I know they say you can spot for 6 weeks...so hoping that’s all it is.

If the discharge has a fishy odor, that would signal bacterial vaginosis, and I would suggest asking your doctor if you can get an earlier appointment so you can start treating it as quickly as possible. In any case, this more than the normal discharge you might expect at this point, so you may want to run it by him to find out what he thinks. Best wishes for sorting this out soon, and for continued health and healing!

Spotting or bleeding can happen at any time during these initial weeks post-op, even if you'd had none to little earlier. What kind of pad are you wearing? The general guideline is if you're filling a maxi-pad in an hour, that would be an emergency. Using a mini-pad or panti-liner is within the range of normal. Women may notice more discharge around the 3rd or 4th week when stitches start dissolving, or when you're doing more activities at any time.

The odor of the discharge can be unpleasant - we're talking old blood, dissolving stitches, body fluids being expelled from inflammation. If it's fishy-smelling, yes, that could be a sign of infection. While I didn't have any spotting, my discharge was definitely a different smell than I was used to, more pungent and earthy.

We've got a few articles which serve as guides to what's normal and what warrants a call to your doctor:It's always okay to call your doctor if you're unsure about what you're experiencing. After all, you're still a patient.

Same here, I'm two weeks post op but had a cuff repair a week ago. I'm no longer spotting/bleeding, but I have a yellowish discharge with what I think could best be described as a sour smell. Not fishy, but sour. Hoping it's normal!

I was told I would have a lot of discharge and it would smell bad. I am 2 weeks posted tomorrow. Only minimal d/c so far. Some of the vaginal stitches are starting to dissolve, so not sure if d/c will increase? I felt so unprepared for this, but I had major prolapse so had to have the surgery!

Agree about feeling unprepared! I wish I would've known about this site before surgery. I had no idea all the weird things the body would do. And it seems like everyday there's something new that pops up. All my friends who had one done must have forgotten their recoveries....the never mentioned the weird smells etc..haha!

Right!?! Everyone told me how happy I would be after it was done, it was the best thing I could ever do, etc. NEVER any of the bad stuff - not that I wouldn't do it again, I'm still glad I did it,but it's so funny how people only tell you how great it is, not the reality of recovery and that it's HARD and GROSS. LOL

Well I have been pretty specific to some of my friends in case they go through it! LOL I'm 58 and barely know anyone who went through anything close to this. I agree re: all kinds of weird bodily sensations and how about going from constipated to having diarrhea back to constipated?

Christine_58, a great place to compare notes and share updates with other women in the same time frame of recovery is your Recovery Discussion Group for Aug 31-Sep 06 - Recovery Thread for short. CaptAmerFan, Shrimps and Indyanna are already posting there. You are absolutely right that unless you've been through this surgery, it's difficult to impossible to understand. We look fine on the outside, but ohhhh the inside!
