Do you keep your cervix with a LAVH?

I was doing some reading up on LAVH and read on more than one site where it said that you didn't get to keep your cervix with a LAVH. I plan on asking my Dr but just wanted to know in advance what happened with you all who has already had one!

Thanks a million in advance!!!

Re: Do you keep your cervix with a LAVH????

Hi there,
I'm fairly new too, LAVH scheduled 6.2.09.
I am not keeping my cervix.
I think if you are, it's described as a supra-cervical hysterectomy. Hopefully someone who's had one can verify.
If you have any questions about what you're keeping/not keeping, definitely discuss with your doctor.

Re: Do you keep your cervix with a LAVH????

With the LAVH procedure, the cervix is not retained, as the docs go in through your vagina and cervix to complete the surgery.

As the other (((sister))) said, if you keep your cervix, it's called a supracervical hysterectomy. You can either have it done laproscopically (the LSH) or abdominally (the SAH).

Hope this helps!

Re: Do you keep your cervix with a LAVH????

No. In order to remove the uterus through the vagina, the cervix needs to be removed also. You cannot remove the uterus through the cervix. It simply will not fit :-) If you want to keep your cervix, I would discuss a LSH (Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy) with your doctor.

Re: Do you keep your cervix with a LAVH?

wow, thank you all so much, you just cleared that up for me too. I'm scheduled for a TVH and thought i had a choice with keeping my cervix, but it sounds like no unless i go the route of LSH. I love this site and i'm getting clearer on the things i want to specify with my doctor in my pre op visit. Hugs and blessings to you all. IL Sister

Re: Do you keep your cervix with a LAVH?

I had a total LAVH for cervical cancer. The "total" part means that it was cervix and uterus. The LAVH just means they hysterectomy is laparoscopically assisted vaginal. Ask your doctor if you are keeping your cervix or not. And be sure to tell him/her what your wishes are regarding keeping/having removed.

If just the uterus is removed, I've seen it referred to as a partial and I've seen it called a sub-something or other. (Sub total? that's not right).

Re: Do you keep your cervix with a LAVH?

Subtotal is a hyst type!

A total or complete hysterectomy refers to the total or complete uterus with cervix being removed.

A subtotal, supracervical or partial hysterectomy refers to a hysterectomy where the cervical portion of the uterus will not be removed.

For what it is worth, an oophorectomy refers to the removal of the ovaries!
