Mirena for post-menopausal bleeding? (No ovaries)

Hello everyone, I have searched the forums and the internet and it seems to be hard to find information about this. I am 8 years post-BLSO, so surgical menopauses, but an intact uterus. I have had off and on severe bleeding and cramps over these 8 years. Cancer has been ruled out. My doctor wants me to have the Mirena IUD inserted. I have heard horror stories about it, but mostly from pre-menopausal women. Can anyone share their experience?

I'm sorry that you haven't had any input yet from members who have experience with Mirena. Hopefully someone will be along to share.

Discuss your concerns with your doctor. Ask if there are alternatives to try if you don't want to try the Mirena.

I see that you have a hysterectomy date for next year. Is that still the plan?

Thanks for the feedback! I am still hoping someone else has a similar experience. I cannot find any information anywhere! No response to posts on Facebook Mirena pages either. I am scheduled for a hysterectomy in April 2021 but my gynecologist wants me to still try Mirena in case it solves my problems so I can avoid surgery. Going for a second opinion in December and will certainly bring up my concerns then.

Do you have fibroids? There has to be a reason you are bleeding and I would want this investigated further. Perhaps a Hysteroscopic d&c is in order so a definitive diagnosis can be determined before inserting a hormone device. Fibroids will grow significantly if given a large dose of hormones so it’s imperative to know why you are bleeding. This would be my course of action. Personally I refuse all artificial hormones but not all agree.

Thanks for the input! I have had multiple ultrasounds, endometrial biopsies and a hysteroscopy with d&c. One tiny fibroid. Nothing else, and cancer ruled out. My gynecologist is extremely puzzled. I agree HRT is somehow implicated...but even with HRT I am suffering crazy night sweats. Cannot imagine going off it yet.

Night sweats is probably from the fibroid. Hormones feed fibroids. Treating the fibroid will most likely resolve these issues. Is the fibroid in the uterus or in the muscle? Small fibroids are just as disruptive as large ones minus the bulk. I suggest speaking to an Interventional Radiologist to see if the fibroid can be embolized. I was embolized for a 9 cm fibroid. Bleeding immediately stopped and my tumor shrank by at least 90%. All my sweating and hot flashes resolved very quickly too. Interventional Radiologists are fibroid experts and their methods spare the uterus. I highly suggest checking into it as you may be able to avoid a serious surgery.

That sounds like excellent advice. Doctor never mentioned the fibroid, it has been there for 15 years, I only know it is still there because the ultrasound tech mentioned it. Will look I to this!

I had no trouble with it . I was 59 with bleeding for 8 mo this until surgery. It didn’t help but I didn’t have problems at all.

Re: Mirena for post-menopausal bleeding? (No ovaries)

Hello there.

I don't have Mirena, but I do use daily progesterone pills since a while now. Like you, I have double BSO, so no ovaries leaving uterus inside. Like you I started to have bleeding, spotting and period like bleeding very intense after both of my ovaries were removed. My uterus is full of fibroids, but the bleeding problem wasn't related to the fibroids at all, after many exams (ultrasound, histero, endo biopsy, etc) a hormone blood test showed the problem, my levels of estrogen where high and my FSH was in the fertile side, so I wasn't in menopause (even without both ovaries) the culprit and source of all my bleeding was this, so after that they confirm I have an ovary remnant producing hormone and stimulating my endo line so the bleeding continuos.

I was putted on progesterone since then, was on Lupron also for 6 months, still on daily progesterone pills and since 1 year no bleeding at all, not even a drop of pink, nothing.

So, have you check your blood hormones? It could be an ovary remmant.
