what to drink/have on hand the day of bowel prep?

First of all I have to say what a HUGE help everyone on here as been....a BIG Thank you!!!

I had me pre-op appt today so I have all of these thoughts, questions running through my mind. I am to start my bowel prep the day prior to surgery at 7:00 am.....my doctor really preached to me how important it is to stay hydrated that day. He said once everything is out/over with I need to drink, drink, and drink some more. He said I could have clear chicken or beef broth and Gatorade, water etc.....For any of you that were lucky enough to go through the lovely bowel prep...LOL what did you drink that day? I know myself and once I feel nausea I just kind of freeze up and don’t want anything else. He said the people that have the hardest time after surgery with nausea and recovery are the ones that come in dehydrated or nearly dehydrated....just wanted suggestions what else to have on hand that day to drink?

Re: what to drink/have on hand the day of bowel prep?

I mainly drank water and some diet sprite...I think I also had some popsicles and jello. I am not a chicken broth person...I'd rather go hungry. After sitting on the pot all day, I wasn't really that hungry. Water, water, water, even after surgery...that's what I wanted...and I got up and walked as soon as they took out the catheter...Good luck...my cousin is having the same thing you are on 2/16! This website has just been great for me, too. I had my hysterectomy a year ago and I found this site months before I even had my surgery. I learned a lot of great tips from here!

Re: what to drink/have on hand the day of bowel prep?

I had to do the bowel prep too. For some reason I was not allowed to have dark liquids. I mainly drank water, light tea, and diet 7-up. I hate jell-o so I didn't "eat" that.
I have a problem with nausea regardless of the type of surgery, so they gave me somthing for that before I went in for surgery.
I hope everything goes well for you,
B

Re: what to drink/have on hand the day of bowel prep?

I've never been nauseated with any of my bowel preps. However, if you have been nauseated before then you should ask your Dr. for some anti-nausea meds. There are some great meds out there that dissolve on your tongue and don't make you sleepy.

I like all of the usual suspects (broth, gatorade, etc.) and then Sprite and sugar-free gum.

Re: what to drink/have on hand the day of bowel prep?

I drank my usual green tea, green iced tea. I added beef broth and chicken broth, I had a doctor who required a two day liquid diet before hand. I had soda in the house and water ice. I had so much juice and Gatorade and soda in it was funny, and Bought it all on one shopping trip, it looked like I was running an orphanage. But I was so glad I did because after the soda helped when I felt like I could pop from the gas, it helps me burp, and the cranberry juice helped me with my bladder and the apple juice helped in ways that prune would have if i like prune.
Its helpful to eat lite the day before your prep, and take as much time as you need getting the stuff sown so you don't get nausea

I also had lemon ice whch is like an upscale lemon popsicle

Nice because it gave you the sensation of something solid but it really isn't. Popsicles can help give you that sensation as well.

I had to stay away from anything red in case they nicked a bowel they didn't want it looking like blood (I guess).

for your prep.
