Re: Concerned about weight gain - HELPPPPP

Hi there, I am having my surgery the same day as you but leaving my ovaries in. I also have lost 80 pounds over the years, and weight gain is a concern. I plan to start walking asap as well as have only healthy food in the house, it's not like I am going to be able to go out and buy junk food right after. I guess my situation is different, but I want to wish you well with your surgery!

Re: Concerned about weight gain - HELPPPPP

It's not a given that you will gain weight. Even with my TAH and the weeks of unusual inactivity I have lost 11 pounds since my surgery. I too have lost a considerable amount of weight prior to surgery but eating high fiber and protein and drinking lots of fluids has kept the weight at bay.

I walk about a mile a day right now, even though I was up to 6-8 miles a day prior to surgery. I will get back there..it's just going to take time and I am confident I won't re-gain what I lost.

It's going to be a battle...but I am prepared to fight any unnecessary weight gain because I had this surgery to get healthier!

Re: Concerned about weight gain - HELPPPPP

I had a TAH (vertical incision) in June. I haven't gained any weight. I started walking short distances the second week after surgery and gradually built up my distance. I was back to normal walking distance in probably three weeks. I started doing other exercise like kayaking and stationary bike (with doctor's approval) after four week check up and resumed all my regular exercise after six week check - going easy on the abdominal part of my yoga routine until probably 10 weeks.

Weight gain/loss is no different after hysterectomy. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight. If you don't you won't.

Re: Concerned about weight gain - HELPPPPP

Thank you sisters for sharing your experiences. I share the concern about weight gain and I am glad to read that weight gain is not inevitable.

Ambrosia, I am impressed with your level of activity so soon after the surgery. Continued success and best wishes.

Re: Concerned about weight gain - HELPPPPP

My appetite has stayed low since surgery--so that part at least has helped! And smaller meals has also helped my GI tract adjust after all the upset of everything getting moved around. So it's been manageable for me.

So envious on the daily mileage for some of you. Just not there yet with my body. Understand the process, and I miss being more active! Keep up the good process.
