Upcoming hysterectomy 11/25: Weight Lifting (Free Weights) Concerns Post-Op
Hello! First post here, so hopefully I'm in the right place. I am having a TLH/BS/Cysto (essure removal) on 11/25 and I have been reading horror stories about prolapse concerns. I'm concerned that I won't be able to lift free weights again after my procedure. I'm not a body builder by any means but I do throw some weights around.
Has anyone experienced issues lifting after a hysterectomy? I know anatomy is different for everyone but I thought maybe someone could give me hope and put me at ease...

Re: Weight Lifting (Free Weights) Concern
and
While prolapse is a concern post-op, understand that prolapse is a concern for women who've never had have hysterectomies, too. Having surgery doesn't mean you will absolutely have prolapse down the road - it just happens to be one of several risk factors, none of which necessarily rank higher than another nor tip the scales.
We've got an article Risk Factors for Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP). Of the list of 12, I've got 6 of them: heavy lifting, aggressive exercise, vaginal childbirth, pelvic surgery, past constipation and menopause. On the other hand I've got genetics and not being overweight nor a smoker working in my favor. So far, all is well.
I didn't find my fitness groove until 40 when I started running. I added free weights by age 50 - got a pair of Selectron adjustable weights for my birthday - and got darned good with them. Age 54 (4+ years ago) I had my hysterectomy for fibroids in late spring. I was running again by fall and ran a 3 mile race over the Christmas holidays. I lifted lighter free weights in a fitness class, but didn't resume headlong. Then almost two years ago I attended a Body Pump class using a bar with weights. I fell in love with the format, ended up joining the gym and attend Body Pump several times a week - I go heavier than most women my age and heavier than a lot of younger women. At my annual well woman exam this year, my doctor (uro-gyn) remarked, "You're healthy and fit!" No signs of any pelvic issues - he would've mentioned prolapse had there been any.
One thing you might want to clarify with your doctor is how your vaginal cuff will be secured. I kept my cervix, something my doctor suggested as he feels there is merit to the case for pelvic floor support, and with my long-term clean history of paps and no family history of gyn cancer, I opted to follow his lead. For cervix removal, a common practice is to reattach some of the ligaments cut from the uterus to the top of the cuff for support, and there are several ways to do that. Talk to your doctor about your hobbies and see what he or she says.
